Gears

I still haven't decided to get 3:42's or 3:73's, but I just wanted to ask if there was any specific brand name to get in order to get the best quality and performance and durability, and where I should go to get them?

I looked at a few on Summit's website, but I wasn't sure which ones to go for....I have a '94 Z28, so which specs would I need the gears to be? I honestly have no clue what any of the descriptions meant for them....thanks in advance.

Re: Gears

I've got 3.73s in mine right now, in my opinion, the 3.42s are probably the better choice. You won't notice much difference if any between the 3.42 and the 3.73, but the 3.42s will bring the cruising rpms down a little, plus as you get faster in the 1/4 mile you may have to switch back to a higher gear to keep from shifting into OD before the finish line. I used GM gears in mine and haven't had a problem with them.

Re: Gears

What ever gears you get you will need to get them for a 2 series carrier. I personally would go with the 3.42's.

I know Richmond makes a gear set that will fit the 2 series carrier.

Re: Gears

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I don't really plan on taking the car on long highway trips, but I'd like it if my gas mileage wasn't totally killed and if and when I do take it on the highway, I wasn't revving so high.

I don't have any major engine mods planned (cam, heads) so I'm not really worried about having to upgrade the gears anytime soon.

Thanks again for the help.

Re: Gears

I second that. Even if he has 2.73s the converter would still be a bettoer mod, but it costs a few hundred more.

I went from 3.42's to 4.10's and barely noticed a difference in gas mileage, so I wouldn't think the difference between 3.42 and 3.73 is even noticable.
