12bolt questions
I'm considering ordering a 12 bolt complete rear end for my '95Z.
One manufacturer offers the option of several differentials. I'd appreciate your input as to which one would best fit my application. I'll be using the car as a daily driver, occasional touring, with little to no drag racing.
Those being the criteria which is better, Eaton or Auburn?
That's my questions. Any info or opinions appreciated.

I've been working on rearends since the late 60s'. If the Eaton is the regular posi(clutch plates) and based upon your stated usage,either the Auburn or Eaton is fine. As their operation is similar,I like both and use both and don't have a preference of one over the other.

Both have a spider gear arrangement and spider gears do break,but not often enough to be concerned. Both have a 'clutch' arrangement. The Eaton utilizes clutch plates that do wear over time,the Auburn utilizes 'cone' clutches that do wear over time. As far as a smoother differential action in turns,I prefer Auburn,but the Eaton can be just as smooth with the proper amount of 'friction modifier additive'. As an Auburn wears,the casting material of the cones and housing form a 'slurry' in the fluid which can be abrasive to the bearings and gears. If an Auburn is your choice,periodic(bi-yearly) gear lube changes would keep the 'slurry' to a minimum.

Good to know. Looks like I'm going with the Eaton. I am going with a 12 bolt rear end from Strange and that's what they use. They recommend an 85w-140 gear oil with a limited slip additive (even if the gear oil says it has the additive). Does that gear oil weight correspond with your experience?

I have the Strange 12-bolt, with the 33-spline Eaton "super duty" posi. It's sitting behind an 800HP/800lb-ft nitrous motor. When the car still had the T56, and a Street Twin clutch, it had no problems with 5,000-6,000 RPM clutch dumps on super sticky slicks on a well-prepped track. Also has exhibited good street manners over the years.
