Angry Quest For The 9's Falls Dead This Year

My 4L60e that had less than 1000 miles on it decided to $hit the bed today. I was driving it around and it was just great.

Not 30 seconds later , I decide to jump on it and it feels like its blowing past the converter so I get off.

I then discover I have no Reverse and no Neutral gears. Everything is forward. So a tranny that just cost me a load is gonna cost me more or it will have to be a TH-350 conversion, but I hate to go down to 3 gears.

Either way, it looks like she is laid up for the year.

Anyway that just $uck$.. I was looking forward to seeing the car run on Friday..

Why not go to a built 4L80 then? There is a guy running around in Cinncy that has one in his 4th Gen...he builds trannys and says its been very reliable for him. Might be a good alternative to a TH-350/400.

If you think a TH400 is expensive, do some hunting around for what it is going to cost you to build a 4l60e or 700r4 that will handle your power.

NOT CHEAP.

With that said, I purchased a TH400 core and had it rebuilt with coan parts and a pro tree brake. I have under $800 in the trans.

You say you need a new torque arm and converter? Well break that 4l60 a couple more times and you'll be kicking yourself for not swapping.

Good luck.

Damn Nick, that really sux.
The TH350 swap is prolly a good choice. You can always get a Gear Vendors unit to get back the lost gears. And I don't think there's a big strength issue between a 350 and 400, assuming the 350 is built right. Kempf went with a 350 in his monster IIRC.

There's always the Ford AOD conversion as well.

I am bouncing a few things around right now.

I am just baffled that it broke after less than 1000 miles on it. That just seems weird to me. I am gonna throw a call to ARE and see what can be done.

You local guys know how the car moves, its not like the tranny ever got beat on

Could it have anything to do with that bad bushing, or whatever it was?

Nick if your looking for a th350 I have my backup trans for sale $325, has 20 passes on it. My friend has gone 9.8's on about the same trans, his has a brake, mine does not. I'm in Troy I'll be around all weekend, or if you need to look at a car with a th350 in it.
