Talking Preping for drag raceing

Hey Guys!

I am thinking about getting my car preped for High School drag races. i believe there on May 8th

i have a good feeling about it after looking at last years qualifiers.
High School Drag Series - Pacific Raceways : Pacific Raceways

I have a Stock 1995 Z28 just wanting to know what i could do to get better speed and time. i currently dont have a job so money is an issue. but what is cheap that i could possibly do, a friend is willing to help me prep it. he said we could custom make a exhaust system.

Any suggestions is greatly needed!

please dont comment about money being a problem, im already awear of that im currently looking for a job so i can get a good exhaust system, headers, cold air intake and other things.

You could lighten the load by removing the spare tire and jack--36 lbs. I think.I would remove the air filter but only for the race. Then put everything back in when the race is over.Go to shoeboxes site for the throttle body bypass. It's good for 6 or 7 hp.Other than that, you will have to invest.Hope this helps.

Thanks Fatdog! I know it is a stupid question hahah. Would straight piping my car add hp? take hp away? or nothing really? cause my friend said we could make a straight pipe system ourselves.

I think you may gain 5 or so on a stock exhaust. Not really worth it as you have to weld it all back again for cop inspections(at least here in calif.)New spark plugs really make a difference and new wires, the right tire pressure.Hope this helps.

Re: Preping for drag raceing

do you know much on camshafts? i dont know what i should upgrade to. honestly i think i should rebuild the engine and just make it a 383 stroker. i have 189k miles currently. i have put on around 5 to 10 miles on it myself. what do i need to look for when deciding on if i need a engine rebuild?

Is the car using any oil? If not that's a good sign.Might make sure all the fluids are changed regularly.Hope this helps.
