Thumbs up Not an LT1 question, but need some opinions on what size slicks to run??

I know this is an LT1 board but I figured there would be some drag racers in here that could help us out on some slick sizes. First off, I am making this post for my dad as he doesnt go on these boards at all. He has a 1970 Chevelle with the LS6 454 and a 4-speed Borg-Warner nodular iron case transmission. Also, the complete drivetrain is built to handle the power as we have raced it many times before. Our problem is, we have Hoosier 26x9in slicks and they are getting worn where they wont even hook up anymore. Right now with the 4.11 gears and the 26" slicks, his best time is a 12.06 @ 115mph with a 60' around the high 1.90's. We normally launch @ 5000rpm or right around there and occasionally it will hook up and sometimes it wont. We have tried launching lower and it doesnt help either. So my main question is what size slicks should we go with??? Some people say to go with a 28x10.5 or 28x11.5, and some others say to stay with the 26x10's. Right now we just dont know which way to go. This coming fall we will be installing a TH400 with a transbrake so we need the slicks to work with the auto and the stick. IF anyone has concerns that the car didnt run a 12.06, I have the time slips available. If anyone here can help us out, it would greatly be appreciated.

Brian

26" or 28" is a question of rpms going through the traps....

I wqas running 26" and just changed this season to 28" to slow me down a bit (12.00 dial cutoff for Street ET).

My sixty foot times went from high 1.5's to low 1.6's, and mph went from 1-8-109, to 109-110 on normal hot days like last weekend. I managed to pull my ET's up from high 11's to low 12's unless the weather is really good.

Your Dad's car isn't any quicker than mine but your sixty foot is much higher and so I expectyour trap speed would be quite a bit faster.

I have been running ET Streets. Current size is 28" x 12.5" x 15", prior size was 26" x 11.5" x 15".

If you only run heavy or modified, you could use an ET Drag series. Whether or not you go to a 18" tall tire depends on your rpms at the traps and how you launch. I don't understand how I can cut 1.5-1.6 sixty foot times on ET Streets and you can't go lower than a 1.9x on slicks. It doesn't make sense. What other suspension changes have you made, or are the tires really so old that that they are about as soft as brick?

tnthub,

When we race the car, it is mainly just for fun. We do have certain race events with our Chevelle club during the season, but it is run what ya brung type of thing. So it doesnt matter if we run a real drag slick, or an ET street. We prefer to use a real drag slick. You had asked if we have done anything to the suspension and the question is yes an no. The rear has all hotchkis control arms-upper and lower, new poly bushings throughout, but it still has the stock springs and shocks. The Hoosier slicks we have are probably about 5 yrs old, and during the winter we made a mistake about keeping them in the garage, this was bad because you ae not supposed to let them freeze as it will ruin the slicks. The slicks are actually still soft, but no matter how big of a burnout or small one he does, they will not hook period. He tried launching at 3000, 3500, 4000 etc and still no hook. We actually have had only one good day at the track with the freshened up motor as the first time out with it we blew up the original tranny, then the next time it smoked a clutch, and finally we got it all back together and it ran the 12.06 run with a horrible 60'. Also, this car is well over 4000lbs. It probably has a weight of about 4200-4300 lbs. Do you think with a heavy car like it is, should we stay with the 26x10" slick so that we keep the revs up while going through the 1/4, or should we risk going with a 28x10.5 and help the launch out a bunch and loose rpm at the traps?? What a confused mess, any opinions would be really aprreciated.
