Maybe I should just get some wheels other than my ZR1's to go to the track on. One day I'll do that, and get around to taking some weight out of this pig too.

My father in law was getting 1.7 60's on 555Rs on his 4000lb big-block Buick.

Not saying MTs aren't a better tire -- just that something about your setup isn't allowing you to take full advantage of what the Nittos can do.

I know Nitto's can do 1.7's, hell a friend of min got his to go a 1.4, all I am saying is that the are not as good on my car as a M/T for whatever reason.

Apples and oranges Jake. Different car, different power band, different trans gear ratios, and totally different suspension system. You can NOT compare the 2 at all.

Sure I can.

A quote I've always liked: "Comparing apples and oranges is easy. Comparing apples to apples, on the other hand, is an exercise in futility."

As far as the tires are concerned, on two cars with solid rear axles (and assuming that both are properly centered), it seems to me that the primary relevant variables are track prep, tire size (my FIL is using 275/60/15s), tire pressure, and weight transfer. All of the things you listed are things that affect weight transfer.

The OP blames the Nittos for his bad short times. I agree completely that a set of Mickeys will cure the symptoms on his current setup, but IMO it's a band-aid for another undiagnosed problem (or possibly multiple problems) which will remain and which may come back again (possibly with different symptoms) if he continues to add horsepower. Then again, the additional horsepower or other powertrain modifications made to support it (different trans/gears/converter, etc) might solve the problem anyway.

If he doesn't care or doesn't intend to add much more horsepower, then everything I'm saying can be ignored -- but it's still true.

Get them smoking GOOD, 19-20psi... that was my best result..That's not bad at all! is this with nitrous? If so, you did really good. I had a HARD time going 12.99 on 315 Nitto's when I had a tiny motor and nitrous. The torque spike instantly breaks them loose. I'd spin and go 13.00X all day. ET Streets got me to 12.80.

Rod442 does well with his Nitto's, especially considering it's a 6 speed and has boost.

Last year I got 315 Nitto's to go 1.72, I'd call it luck though. It was 1 of MANY passes. The problem now is the 4500 stall.. rolling into the throttle slowly is a real patience test. Full throttle about 40 feet out and when it stayed hooked up I was actually cheering in my helmet. It hadn't done that all day!

You totally missed the point of my post. The suspension of a Camaro, even though it has a straight axle, is totally different than an old Buick. It's shorter and tighter so it doesn't transfer weight anywhere as well in stock form. I know from personal experience what it took to make my Firebird hook well.
Yes everything you said was true. He could spend the time and money to make it hook on Nittos. Or he could do as most do and over tire it for cheap. Most don't want to spend the money or make the suspension compromises that a drag set up requires.

But.....................there's always a but. Rod's car has aftermarket LCAs, LCA relocation brackets, QA1 12 WAY adjustable shocks all around with drag launch springs in the front, and a BMR torque arm.
I would dare to bet that without these suspension mods it would just be a smoke fest with the Nittos.

275/40/17's and no nitrous, N/A.

The car only has a little suspension work, and it has a key component working against it, the springs.

The car has:
UMI Weld In SFC's
BMR Tubular Adjustable T/A (set to -3*)
BMR Tubular Adjustable Pan Hard Rod.
SLP STB
SLP John Aims Lowering PKG... aka Eibach Sportlines

I know the springs are pretty much killing my launch, but they were the first thing I did to my car, ten years ago when I was in HS. I really do like the way the car sits a little too much to get something like a "drag" kit, but I do plan on at least swapping them out for some BMR lowering springs, my friends LS1 car went 1.5's all day with those and M/T's when it only dynoed 360rwhp.

Besides that, whenever I have the money I will get a bigger rear sway bar, LCA's and LCA relocation brackets at a minimum. Until I can do that I will have to just suffer with my crappy 60's, but it is what it is.
