I know, I'd just like to go to the track with the cam/nitrous. I haven't been since I added those. (for fear of the rearend... )

It's not a DD so I don't know why I care, but I don't want it to be down for a year.

Re: 10-bolt and slicks. Does this make sense?

Reher Morrison had a good article about burnouts and what causes engine wear. He told about taking apart engines that were used two different ways in the bleach box.

The first type of burnout was to spin the tires until they grabbed and jerked the car out of the box. The sudden shock this put on the engine showed significantly more wear.

The second type of burnout was to spin the tires till they smoked then let off before they would grab, and then drive out of the box to the lights. This engine showed much less wear.

I imagine this would also make a difference in the wear in the rear end also.

Just food for thought as I think it goes right along with what we are talking about.

I run an LPW cover on both my cars. Use the LPW cover, not the cheap TA that everyone loves for no apparent reason.

The Z28s 10 bolt has been in for 9 years (switched to 4th gen rear for wheel fitment and brakes), and has seen numerous 1.6x 60' times. It's a factory 3.42 rear and it uses a Nitto 315/35r17 drag radial. The TA still has the stock 10 bolt with a 3.73 gearset and has seen numerous 1.4x 60' times and runs a MT 305/35r18 drag radial.

Solid pinion spacer, rear cover/girdle with the carrier cap supports, and welded axle tubes will make 10 bolt substantially stronger for little investment.

Surprising, not only due to the quoted source, considering how ridiculously flawed that conclusion was.

Maybe, decide for yourself. Here is the article. Let me know what you think.

Re: 10-bolt and slicks. Does this make sense?

2 10bolts for me with just a cam and headers and drag radials was enough for me to buy the 12 bolt. I haven't had to touch the 12 bolt in the last 7 years now and probably 1000 passes. It is probably due for a fluid change but only about 5000 miles on it. I am so happy I went to the 12 bolt though; one day I will learn to hook with it too and really put it to use.

Re: 10-bolt and slicks. Does this make sense?

I really really want a 12-bolt, I want to feel my teeth get knocked through the back of my head on a hard launch. For now, I will just stick with this 10-bolt.

I think you misunderstood what he said. You said/implied that traction wears engines, and that could translate into rear axle damage...

The article you linked CLEARLY stated that the burnout itself wasn't a problem. He said prolonged activation of rev limiters and wheel hop/tire shake cause problems. Well no kidding.

I was focused on the gradual grip vs the sharp hook in terms of rear end life in terms of rolling out of the burnout.

Re: 10-bolt and slicks. Does this make sense?

I know this thread is semi-old, but FWIW and future knowledge/people looking for answers, I have 46 runs on my stock 10 bolt, 2.73 gears over the last 2 summers.

What kind of tires are you running and what are your 60'? Just wondering.

- Street tires (don't know the brand, car is in storage for the winter and can't walk out to check)
- Best 60' of 2.110
- Worst 60' of 2.264
