SBC rebuild question

ok, so i havent been on here in a while but i started taking a class were i had to buy an engine to rebuild... so i choose a sbc (naturally) so i may be here often asking questions as i go lol

so the casting number on the block is 3970010, the heads are 333882.... im looking to do a complete rebuild, new rings, bearings, cam bearings, gaskets, oil pump, timing chain
with this, id like to put a small/ moderate cam, lifters and springs to get as close to 300hp as possible for as cheap as possible... i found a cam thats in my price range 0.454 int./0.480 exh. lift

so my question is: will this cam work in my engine? too much lift for the heads? id also like to mill these heads to get the ccs down, will this limit the amount of lift i can have? the cam i listed is the biggest id put in the motor as well
so much can i mill these heads (i have all the tooling) before i have any problems, id like to see 9.5-10:1 comp

sounds like a fun project. i recommend getting a good book and practice porting the heads. Take your time it is easy to mess up. I would also recommend replacing the pistons with a cast or hyperutectic piston that will bring the compression up to what the piston manufacturers say will be 10.0 to 1. If you do not deck the block and use replacement head gaskets the compression ratio will be around 9.5 to 1. the cam is going to be the most important part of the equation. lift is not as important as the duration and lobe seperation angle. i recommend going to comp cams website and downloading the cam quest software that is a fun program to play with. edelbrock performer rpm intake or intake. good start here and check for complete kits with the crank and rods done. can be cheaper if you search around. good luck
