No spark?

I have an 81 z28 with an accel HEI ignition system, and it doesnt get any spark. I pulled out a plug and stuck it into the wire and held it to the header and had my dad crank it over and it didnt spark.

I have no experiance with hei's, any advice would be great, thanks.

check for 12 volts on the wire plugging into the bottom of the cap. should be red or feaded to a pink. after that pull the cap and check to make sure the cap isn't burnt. is this a new install or just died thing. make sure the power wire is not plugged into the tach side.

Its getting 12 volts, and its been in the car since I got it and has ran fine until now.

But I think I found the problem, When I pulled the top of it off the stud thats on the bottom was just barely hanging there by a really small spring, and then it fell off.

I figure I can just buy a new Accel HEI in cap super coil and this will be fixed?

that is normal i believe. that is i think the carbon button and spring that comes with the cap. it goes in between the cap and coil. order goes cap, button, rubber disc, spring, coil.(spring goes in the middle of the disc). pull the cap to check the rotor. may have broken or came apart.

I forget what its called but the black chip looking thing on the bottom might be burnt out to mine went in mine. The silcone dries out and its shorts so check that and if its that put some silicone on it and hope that, that works

86 Iroc-Z28 310CI,
This is my next guess, as I replaced the cap/rotor and coil and still nothing.

ok now I just replaced the ignition control module and still nothing, BUT I did notice that when I turn the car to on, the dash doesnt turn on like the voltage doesnt read and also when the car sits for a while the tach needle moves up to about 1500 and when I would turn the car to on it would go back down to zero, but now it doesnt move.

Could this be my problem?
