My first Camaro

Hello CamaroZ/28.com.
Recently I ran across a 1979 Z/28. It was ugly, rust every where. Not the typicle rust, rust on the sides of the fenders, in the middle of the doors, the deck lid under the spoiler, wheel wells. Really odd places. What was really intriguing about the car is that it has 60k original miles, 350, m-21, 3.73 rear gears, am/fm 8-track still in the dash, everything under the hood still stock, interior not bad at all, all center caps and rings. Even the space saver and jack are original and have never been out of the trunk. It's in the shop now getting the original silver back on it. I finished up the rallys last night.
I've only driven the car a small amount since owning it and I have to say it was dissapointing. Not the power I expected given the power train and rear gears. Part of this I expect could be the original catalitic converter still underneath.
What I want to do is keep it looking stock, like my other cars, but get it to compete, and not with my wifes Yaris. I was reading that a set of 062 vortec heads, mild cam, headers and 2.5 exhaust would wake it up. I don't have allot of experience with small block so could use some good advise.
Thank you!
