On a car of that age, it would be prudent to assume that EVERYTHING in the steering linkage and in the suspension assembly is worn and likely worn to the point of being unsafe. Suspicious components should be replaced without question. It's safety you're dealing with here and taking chances is like dancing with the devil. Almost all of the following should be looked at in the same way you might regard a used condom.

Steering components
1. tie rod ends (there are four, inner and outer on each side) should be removed and inspected. The studs may be loose, holes worn, etc.
2. idler arm (there is one)
3. steering box (there is one) and it has minimal provision for adjustment
4. drag link (there is one with no moving parts but it is susceptible to wear in the mounting holes
5. steering knuckles (one on each side)

Suspension components
1. Upper and lower ball joints (one of each on each side)
2. Loose or non functioning shock absorbers (one on each side)
3. Upper control arm bushings (two on each side)
4. Lower control arm bushings (two on each side)
5. steering column rag joint (there is one)

When it's all done, the car will need to be completely realigned.

When beginning to reclaim an older car, inspection and replacement of all the above is one of the first orders of business. Labor is fairly extensive but if you do it all yourself, you'll be able to put that money in your pocket and you'll know a LOT about your car when the job is done. Many of the requisite tools can be accessed through parts stores such as AutoZone or O'Reilley's on a rental or loan basis. If you just beginning in this sport, you may wish to buy some of them. If you live in Southern California, PM me.

Good luck,

c
