The scrap value of steel is good right now. An old 283 would be a better choice of a small V8. A good V6 would be even better.

He never specified a V6 or a V8 and the question was asked in the classic tech section, not the V6 section. The V8 that was offered in 1975-76 was considered the 262. When GM offered the V6 with the same displacement, it was referred to as a 4.3L even though it is still 262 CID.

Even though the metric classifications of the newer engines have a common CID designation, they are referred by their metric size to eliminate confusion with the older models.

The V6 4.3L is a 5.7L with 2 cylinders chopped off. It has the same performance potential as the 5.7L but with less displacement. The 262 V8 however is one of the worst V8 engines GM even built.

Thumbs up 262...cool!

I would agree with the other reply that a 283 is a better choice for a small v-8, but I've never heard of a 262 being built, and that would be so cool. They are the only SB to use a 3.1" stroke, so they aren't the "worst" v-8 made, (that would go to the 267, which uses the same stroke (3.48") as the 350 with a tiny 3.5" bore). If you're trying to build a decent gas mileage performer, why not try the 262? I have yet to see one built, just be real conservative on the cam.
PS: Sorry to any 267 fans out there, yes there are a few, and yes I have seen one run "respectably".
