67-69 302

I asked this question on another board and got chastized because it wasn't a pre 64 question.

Here goes.

In the 67-69 Z28 Camaros a 302 was produced using the following designations, DZ302, MO302, RPO22 or 23, and/or just referred to as a Z28 302. I also understand and vaguely remember a name attached to it like a "Rat" or "Mouse" but that really wasn't it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

Re: 67-69 302

All z28's had a 302 cubic inch engine with a suffix code MO or MP in '67, MI or MO in '68 and DZ in '69. To get the 302 engine Chevy took a 283 crank and put it in a 327 block. The 1969 302's had 4 bolt mains. The 1967 and 1968 302's were 2 bolt main blocks. In 1967 they are small journal cranks and in '68 and '69 they went to large journals.

All the z28 had the dual stripes down the hood and trunk lid while the 69 was the first year of the cowl induction hood. The cowl hood was only optioned for the z28. All z's were 4spds and had 12 bolt rears. All 69 Norwood built camaros had X33 or X77 on the trim tag and some z28 had the rare RPO JL8 rear disc brakes.

The term Rat is used to reference Big blocks like the 396,427,454. All smallblock chevy's are considered mouse motors. Maybe your thinking of the trans am reference. In order for chevy to compete in the SCCA rans am series back in the late 60's the engine size was limited to 305 cubic inches which is why they came up with the 302.
