1996 Z28 SS Value

I have a 1996 Z28 SS several people are wanting to buy from me. There are very few for sale I can compare to know what it's worth. It's #171. Black hardtop with all the SLP options. It has about 130k miles, 30 of which are on a rebuilt engine built for the procharger that's on it. I still have the original block. It's in perfect condition - no cylinder ridge, cross-hatching all still visible. I pulled it with 105k miles - due to the fact that while the crank snout is keyed, some genius decided to spec out a balancer hub that was not, so the blower pulley pulled off the front of the crank and scored it, which is the only reason I rebuilt the engine.

I have the SS cover (never even put onto the car), and the SS floor mats that were never used.

Mechanically, it needs a new clutch, and a new battery but it starts and runs fine. Tires are probably shot.

Cosmetically it's not so good - the dash is cracked, but I have a brand new one already in a box. The windshield is cracked from a hail storm. It would need to be repainted obviously. There are some small hail dents on the rear fenders. The interior is in good shape.

Anyone seen any recently in similar shape that sold? What should I ask for it?

Re: 1996 Z28 SS Value

The value on these cars is starting to go up, but really only for the low mileage examples. I would say around $5500 based on the miles and condition. If you replaced the clutch, dash and windshield you would at least make the money back on the parts and probably sell it a lot faster. Most people interested in these cars are looking for something as close to stock as possible. I would pull the blower off and sell it separate.

By the way, if you are interested in selling the car cover and floor mats, shoot me a PM. I've been looking for a set since I bought my 96 SS .

Re: 1996 Z28 SS Value

How about now? I had a guy that was going to buy it last September for $5500. I would have sold it, but I was busy moving and renovating my house and didn't even look at it until he came to get it and the stupid thing wouldn't start. I remembered later that I removed some of the wires to the MSD box so it couldn't be hotwired. Oh well. But NOW ... it was pretty much destroyed in a hail storm a few weeks ago. The only intact window is the passenger side, huge dents everywhere, even punched holes in the leather seats.

The insurance company just came back with a value of $4,000. I told them that they can't find one I could replace it with for $4,000 and they need to try again. They have no idea about the mechanical condition, which I would make perfect again if the body was restored and I could sell it. The only ones I can find are going for closer to $10,000 so I told him to look and see if he could find a low numbered SS for $4,000.

Re: 1996 Z28 SS Value

I bought my 96 #726 red hard top 6-spd 46k mi. in '08 for $7k. Bank loaned $14k on it based on NADA value. I regretfully sold it in '11 for $8500 only had 58k mi. Here is the current pricing most banks will use to value.

How to convert that to insurance value is anyone's guess. Sorry to hear it was destroyed! Good luck.

Re: 1996 Z28 SS Value

Well, it took a few calls, but I got the insurance company to go $8100. I bought it back and resold it to someone that would give it the TLC it deserved. But the floor mats and cover are up on ebay now at $200 each. If they don't sell, I'll consider other offers.

Let me know if they don't sell. I can't do $400 but maybe we could work something out.
