Replacing stock radio system

I want to replace the stereo system in my 1986 Z28. It has a factory cassette and the unit is large. It has four speakers (two in the dash two in the rear) . My concerns are budget(I'm 15 so its limited) unit size because the stock unit is large and all the modern ones are 1/4 the size and wiring issues

Thanks for any and all help

Re: Replacing stock radio system

Very few cars come with the din size radio that the aftermarkets are made in (older imports predominately). A dash kit that adapts the size of the radio to your car's dash is needed. The din size is the smaller one, the larger ones are double din (think navigation touch screen size). What you have is a 1.5 din that most of the GM and Chrysler/Dodges of that era came with.

Things you would need
*dash kit
*antenna adaptor
*wiring harness (and hope that no one has hacked up the factory wiring, its not a big deal just an added hassle)

The speakers in the dash are 4x6- the difficulty of this will hinge largely on the condition of the dash.
The rears are 6x9 and are a breeze.

All this info and more is accessable at a number of sources and parts dealers like crutchfield, best buy.....

The last HU I bought came from Crutchfield. At the time all HU's 129.99 or more came with a free indash kit, wiring harness, and antenna adapter. I also think it had free shipping. You can't beat that. You can get a nice CD/MP3/USB HU for that price.

On crutchfield it only says 4" or 4 1/2" so how would I find the speakers to fit the dash and rear?

I have the dasj kit you need. And radio. Its a pioneer cd mp3 radio flip down face. The onlything i dont have is the wirng and speakers. But your dash speakers are 4x6 and your rears are 6x8 or 6x9 depending on your stock system setup. But ill sell you everything i have for $75 or ill trade. And i also have a 2400 watt amp and jl audio sub with wiring. Illsell it all for $300. Or trade. Throw me an offer

Re: Replacing stock radio system

6x9's, that was what was in my IROC when I stripped the interior.

In my first Camaro 86 2.8 5-speed I only had the dash speakers. There was no holes cut for the 6x9's in the sail panels, even though I'm sure there was a space behind it.

So I rocked two JBL 4x6's and two Crunch 12's pushed by a Pioneer GMH100 amp with a Pioneer Supertuner III Cassette deck in a sealed box for several years.
