Help with cooling amps!
Hey everyone.
So, two years ago I installed new speakers in my car. The front got Kenwood component speakers, the rear passenger area got Kicker 6.5" subs, and the rear got a JL 10" sub in a custom enclosure.
The summer I installed it, when it was hot out, I had my Boston Acoustics GTA-504 amp went into thermal protection mode a couple times. The Sony Xplode XM-1002HX am that powers the JL rear sub did not though. It would take a while of driving before it happened, like 45 minutes or so. This tells me that everything is wired properly, as it took a long time for this to happen, and it only happened on really hot days.
Now, I have the amp enclosure that I made by hand. I have atached pictures, with the lid off. But, when Im using the car, the lid is always on. I do this because my windows are not tinted, and I dont need people seeing my equipment in there and getting the idea that they need it more than I do. This way it is in stealth mode. I have all the factory grills on the speakers too for this very reason.
Anyways, I have decided to add two 50mm 12v computer fans to the amp enclosure. One will blow in, and the other blow out. Both fans will be on the rear facing side portion of the enclosure, as you can see in the pic.
Now, my question, the 2 12v fans I have are said to be 12 volts. Does this mean I can just take power from the power distribution block I have in the amp enclosure? Should I still put a relay in to control them both? I want to have a switch up by the driver to control the on/off of the fans, because I wont need them on all the time, only during the hotter months.
What is everyone's thoughts on this?
Thanks!
Here is a pic of the entire enclosure. Remember, this has a lid that fits on top that seals it all up tight.
This is a pic of the side that the fans would go in (left side is the rear facing side)
This is the 50mm fan that I have two of that will be mounted in the enclosure
It will look like this, only it will be on the inside of the enclosure. I have also purchased the metal gaurds that will be installed on both sides of the fan, painted black to blend in..
Does it all make sense now?
Am I going about this the correct way, or are there better suggestions?

Re: Help with cooling amps!
Does the speakers need more power than your amp is given them ??
if not the fans should work ..... they sell a rear wall amp mount for 93-02 camaro
easy to install keeping them hidden in the trunk...

Re: Help with cooling amps!
Kenwood speakers
RMS Power Range - 8-65 peak - 280 (watts) Impedance - 3 ohms
Kicker speakers
RMS Power - 150 peak - 300 Impedance - 4 ohms
These both are hooked up to the Boston Acoustics GTA-504 amp
50 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms (80 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms) Means running
65 watts to the Kenwoods, right?
JL 10W3v3-4 sub
power range: 100-500 watts RMS peak power handling: 1,000 watts
Sony Xplod XM-1002HX amp powering the sub
280 watts x 1 into 4 ohms
I've got the power coming from the battery going to a Monster 1UF capacitor, then feeding both amps.
Is there a glaring problem I am not seeing here? Ive got the Alpine CDA-7875 headunit powering the whole operation at 60 Watts x 4 channels.
As you can see from my pics, I already have the amps mounted nicely, I don't want to touch that. I just want to get some air around those amps to cool them down.

Re: Help with cooling amps!
The pictures didn't show up the last time I was here ... looking good !!
I'm using the same JL10W3 sub and box in my Camaro powered by alpine mrp 500 amp
alpine head unit , 4 alpine 6 1/2 and a 250 watt alpine amp for the midrange speakers
If the problem shows up again its most likely because the different ohms from amp to speakers

That sub is freaking amazing. Even at the little power Im throwing at it, she pounds!
I was under the assumption that the ohms would not be that big of a deal? I bought them because I thought they would be getting a little more juice from the amp that way.
Well, if it ever quits snowing here in Minnesota I can drive it and see how the amp reacts now.
