Post Harrison Labs Sub Amp - any good?

I was thinking of getting a Harrison Labs 800W sub amp. I noticed that I never see anyone using them. Are they any good? Here's a link to the website:

http://www.hlabs.com/technical/amplifiers/
http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/harrision_labs.html

Anyone here every use one?

well they do their rated power with a plenty low distortion. I have only seen one in action. The crossover was a pain to set in the dark, but i really liked the very small footprint..... The owner has zero complaints about his amp (the 1600 watt one).

Thumbs up

A co-worker just got his from www.thezeb.com. He brought it in for me to take a look; it's alot smaller and lighter than I thought. It has a single RCA input, so you'll need a head unit that can send a mono sub channel. My Alpine 7998 does. He hasn't hooked it up yet, so I can't comment on the performance yet.

One thing that caught my eye is in the instructions - they rate the amp frequency as 20 to 20,000hz. I thought they were only for subs? Most class D amps only run to 250hz.

Anyone else have any experience with these amps? I'm leaning towards getting a 800W to power 2 10" subs in a Milhouse box.

I wouldn't trust anything made by Harrison Labs. Their amps look cheap as hell. Like someone made them in their garage or something. I especially wouldn't trust their F-Mod crossovers. Richard Clarke (or was it Dave Navone, I forget which) wrote about these a few years ago and found that 1)the crossover frequency isn't at all accurate and 2)the slope was only 6dB/octave and not 12dB as advertised.

I'm not aware of any full range class D car audio amplifiers.

Well i do know a few people from other forums that have used the amps with good results, besides the one guy that i actually heard in his install (SQ install by the way). The amps seem to be of good quality, but i think you are right about the F-Mod crossovers.

I've heard of it, the Beta, just didn't know that it was a full bandwidth class D amplifier.

I'd like to take a look inside of one of Harrison's amps. Something tells me that it probably isn't a very well laid out amp design.

Don't they have an amp that is considered illegal in soundoff competitions? I seem to remember hearing about an amp of theirs that was designed for maximum power but for only brief bursts (burps?) to get high initial SPL numbers.

Yes, they do. It puts out 10k watts, I think, but only at like 55Hz. That's why it's illegal. It's a tone generator. But you say that like it's a bad thing! ) Anybody have any experience with the high power Harrison Labs amps? The 3200.1 , 4800.1 or the 6400.1 ?

I've got an 800.1 Harrison in a 95 2 door Tahoe. The Subs are 2 Digital Design 2512's in a Handmade Sealed box. I am VERY happy with the amp, as I play this system VERY hard. I have it wired down to 1 ohm.

Nothing like bring a topic back from the dead! If anyone is looking into Harrison Labs, I recently talked with someone who owned one of the "higher power" designs. Here's what he said:

"I got the last one from HL...they are now out of stock...but there is one on
E-bay......as for plugs, it just has unusual terminals compared to most
amps, but they are nothing you cant find at radioshack or a hardware
store...it comes with a F-mod for a cros over...when you order the amp you
state where you want it crossed over....50, 70, 80, 100 or 150hz low
pass.....since my pioneer had a built in low pass x-over on the sub output i
got a 20hz high pass f-mod for mine to use as a subsonic filter....as for
power draw, Stan recomended that it be fused with 150amp fusing on both
power inputs and the max draw is 250amps each...but with a good batt and a
100amp alt you can still get full power for burps easly because of the way
that the internal power suply is made...it has a similar set up to the ones
that US amps & Zapco has in their big amps but the HL is one step better...i
only have a 105amp alt and two normal 850amp batts and i can burp the hell
out of it and even though my voltage drops alot the amp will put out rms
power from 11v to 14v...and if you got more voltage it will give you more
power....i tested it on a 18v electrical system (my forklift at work) and i
got justshy of 4000wts rms out of one chanle and dam nere blew up my L7s..."

So I think it's safe to say he's happy with his!
