Summer camping at Ludington, Michigan

Posted 07-07-2008 at 10:23 AM by ws6transam
I took the family for a camping trip at the end of June to Ludington State Park, in northwestern Michigan. The weather was GREAT, although we didn't get our choice camping spot due to flooding. I thought the parks people were crazy when they told us. After all, the park is pretty much built on sand, so flooding would drain off pretty fast. It was draining off fast, but as it turned out, less than a week before, Ludington was hit with TWELVE inches of rain in FOUR hours. It was so much rain, that...

BMW Driver's school: Day two conclusions

Wow, Sunday was great at Gingerman Raceway. The Windy City BMW club really knows how to put on an organized event. It turns out that the stereotypes of BMW owners are not always correct: These folks that were here really didnít care what you drove, so long as you showed courage, attention to track safety, and were willing to learn. The driving school consisted of thirty-minute track sessions, followed by a half-hour rest, and then a thirty-minute classroom instruction. They were pretty strict in...

BMW Driver's school : day one

Posted 06-28-2008 at 09:24 PM by ws6transam
Day one whipped me out. It turns out that I'm the only one who drove 140 miles to the event on the day of the event. I'm also the only one who drove home 140 miles, and will drive 140 mies back to the track on Sunday. Everyone else is staying at the hotel, I think. Those that found out about my commute just shook their head in disbelief... They are mostly from Chicago, and are thus thinking it's a four-hour excercise in pain when in fact it only takes two hours...each...way!

Race prepping for the BMW Driver's school.

BMW's are intimidating. The drivers are all dentists. The instructors are all doctors and retired air force pilots. They all look down at any car made in America, except perhaps a Corvette or Viper. All these people do nothing but check their investments, and drive their cars all weekend.

Thus are the stereotypes.

We'll see how the stereotypes stack up next Saturday when I head off to Gingerman raceway for two days of track instruction. I will arrive at 8 AM on Saturday,...
