Balancing bad economy with fun and career. Such a quandry.

Posted 02-23-2009 at 02:42 PM by ws6transam
I have just go done cleaning off my computer screen. I had to do it, because there was a mixture of saliva, sweat, and tears left over from reading every last word of Jason and Chris's weekend fling with Scott and John's new company Camaros.

It created SUCH a temptation in me to push my '84 out to the snowy curb and hang a FOR SALE, BEST OFFER sign on it. ...Almost enough to make me ignore my wife's wishes to always consult with her on big purchases, and just ORDER me one of those 2SS models in yellow.

What a sweet car. FBodfather, I envy you and your masculine Camaro!

It's interesting. It's been a slow month at the shop where I work, and I have had to reduce my invoiceable hours in order to help out the shop. Plus, I have just heard from an old friend of mine who has over 20 years of employment with Delphi. He's a Machanical Engineer and also an enthusiast who loves the Fbody as much as I. Unfortunately, the writing is on the wall, and Delphi is cutting him loose. He's fifty, with a big mortgage on the house, and now he needs to liquidate everything and look for a new job.

These facts: My reduced income, my buddie's loss of career & mortgage issues, my wife's (wise) insistance that we discuss all big purchases, all make me wonder if buying my dream car is such a good idea right now.

Another little known bit of trivia (that I probably shouldn't blog about) is that my house payment (which is pretty huge), is accelerated such that we'll have the house paid off by 2014. I'll turn 49 years old in 2014.
Perhaps it might not be a bad idea to just stay happy with my (now antique) Trans Am until 2014? It'll be thirty years old that year. Maybe third-gens will start increasing in value by then? My oldest son will (hopefully) graduate that year from high school. If I could just WAIT a bit, I could probably buy a top of the line Camaro new, for cash, if I only waited, and not have to worry about the

I don't know--- Envy is such a rough thing to live through. It has real, tangible side effects, one of which is the difficulty to think clearly about such things. That's probably why this blog is rambling on so badly.

I'm thinking what I need to do is go outside, and start up the Trans Am and just listen to what it says. Perhaps the burble of 400(ish) horsepower will help me feel better. It's been silent since October.

Interesting thoughts, strung together with terrific logic. I am sure you are not the only one making decisions that are not easy in any direction.

I wouldn't mind throwing logic to the wind and paying a visit to my local Chevy dealer either.

I just want to encourage you in your decision. First you sound like a guy that has things in order. Second we cannot go around making decisions based on fear. Set down with your family and set things in the proper order and find where this new Camaro lines up. I wish you well!

Your post could have been written by me! I can probably afford a Camaro, but It just doesn't seem like the most prudent thing for my family -- at this immediate point in time. I have been doing exactly what you are doing with regard to my 4th-gen car. It's a beautiful car that gets compliments every time I drive it. I don't want to get rid of it, so I am going to hold off (just a bit) until I get a 5th-gen.

The number one reason I simply can't buy a new car right now is that I am a boss. I have to make decisions about hiring and firing that affects people's lives. I can't in good conscience, buy a new car when I am probably going to have to lay people off before this thing is over.

I arrived at a decision! Well, not exactly. You might say that my Jeep Grand Cherokee made it for me, when it finally started showing signs of its age. The Jeep's transaxle needs servicing, there's a new oil leak, and now a coolant leak.

Then there was Camaro Envy! Yeah, I have to admit that it played into this decision. My Jeep is used to pull trailers, and handle all the utility jobs I have to do. I've owned it eleven years, and done TONS of maintenance to it. However it's costs were spiraling, and I spent $1400 in repairs just last year. About $1200 the previous year.

So, I went out and scratched the itch, and found me a low-mile, '06 Chevy Avalanche in Victory red! I'm taking a break from detailing the paint with ZAINO as I type this. This truck will get me through 2014, when it's it'll be a possibility that we can replace the Minivan with a Camaro.

My gosh though, For now this is a sweet, sweet truck. My first truck! I always wanted a truck....and an Avalanche 4X4 in red?? Unbelieveably nice! I had to spend all of my new motorcycle money to buy it, but what the heck, the '77 Honda still runs okay and looks cool to boot.

Oh, and about that Jeep: I can't believe the luck. The day I took delivery of my Avvie was the day the Jeep ruptured it's radiator. So I now have a brand new radiator to install into the Jeep before I can push it out to the curb! I guess it got jealous, or something!

Cool WS6! I have an Avalanche too. My '07 is my second one, since my '04 was totaled in a near head-on on January 2, 2007. I love the Avalanche -- it is such a versatile truck (even though one of my partners calls is a "station wagon"). We accuse him of having Avalanche envy Anyway, check out the Chevy Avalanche Fan Club of North America -- www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com. That site is the CamaroZ28.com for Avalanches.

Thanks, Mudbone! I've been there, checked 'em out, and already installed the required amber DRL's! Wow, they shine so brightly I gotta wear shades! Just look for ws6transam on their website.

Oh, and I finished my first coat of ZAINO today. Second coat is going on tonight. I must say, that fan club site is immense and active.
