95 camaro 3.8 issues

Posted 07-11-2012 at 02:53 PM by chris90
Hi my name is Chris. I am a new member. I was needing a little info and help possibly. I have a 95 camaro v6 with the 3800.It is automatic. The issue is, whenever I stop at a stop sign or redlight, I have to downshift to first, remind you it is an automatic, and then back to drive when accelerating from the stop. It seems like it isnt getting enough power to shift correctly or it is stuck in a higher gear.I have had it tested and they said my shift sensors were going bad and that I need new spark plugs and wires which may be why im losing power. But a guy I work with told me that it may also be my catalytic converter. My Cat is bad or stopped up, and was told that it could cause me to lose power also and cause it to drag a**. The guy I worked with said he was having the same problems with having to downshift when stopping and he said he removed his Cat, and he says he has no problems now. Any suggestions or help? Im not going to cut the Cat off for I know it is kind of illegal, but may that be what causing the lack of power and possibility of why its not shifting correctly?

I also have a 95 3.8L and it sounds like a tranny problem with the shifting. As far as losing power it could be many things. My suggestion would be to run the codes on the engine to see whats going on and the fix it accordingly. If your not sure what to fix you can go to any autoparts store and buy a repair book for like $27. Transmissions issues are a little bit different due to the fact that the 95 is different from the rest. Have a trusted garage look at it and go from there..
