Hello, I can't get the computer codes for my 94 z28 (it has automatic transmission). If I use a OBD1 scanner to get codes, it turns both fans on.

Does anyone knows if when disabling the anti theft system, the computer codes could not be retrieved?

Also this car runs hot, both fans will not turn on when needed, the only way they turn on is when braking for large distances (500 m).

I've already changed all temperature sensors, thermostat, water pump, hoses and radiator and computer.

I will appreciate very much if someone has an idea of what could be wrong.

Thanks in advance!!!

Well, Saturday night was cruise night in Orange, VA. Every third Saturday in the warm months, the Burger King in Orange is a pretty nice place to be. Mudbone, Jr. and I had planned to take our cars, but after an afternoon of post-hole digging at church, he and a friend decided to take a cooler down to the river instead. I was bummed, but I can't say I blamed him. It was a hot day. My daughter said she wanted to go with me to the car show, so I checked in with Mrs. Mudbone to see if she wanted to go. She said sure and she'd take Kermit (Jr's. '95). So off we went -- me and Mudbone III in "Jennifer" (the 30th), and the girls in "Kermit".

We got to Orange at around 6:20PM. The gig was supposed to start at 6:00, but folks must have gotten there a lot before that. The place was packed. We did manage to find a nice place to part the two cars together (no pix, sorry) and set up our folding chairs. We all walked around for about an hour looking at the other cars. I ran into 5thGenCrazy68 and his car was looking sweet. There were at least 25 really nice cars, and about 150 or more interesting specimens. It was worth the trip, and Mrs. Mudbone accurately noted, it beats sitting out in the hot sun at a daytime show!

Anyway, we ambled back to our spot and settled in. Many folks stopped by to look and talk. I was really surprised though, at how many folks lingered around "Kermit". That Polo Green car is a real eye-catcher and people don't hesitate to check it out -- even to the point of ogling him and then breezing past "Jennifer" without so much as a pause! Poor girl, low miles, pristine condition and 1 of 729 credentials. Don't fret girl, the truly knowledgeable stopped in for scrutiny. Those folks get your pedigree! Still, it was funny to see a totally stock daily driver catch so many eyes. Mudbone, Jr. -- you've got a nice one there.

Okay bros and babes, here's the deal. Let me lay it out up front. I am recently married, am not in the market for shopping if you know what I mean but have made one very interesting observation about this car. Everytime I bring it up, it comes up, or some one pulls up in a 2010, the ladies seem to get "very" distracted and or very interested in it. So much that I have a list of young cuties who all want to be seen riding shotgun. This isn't some scientific statistical study by any means as i had to look up the word statistical to ensure I was spelling it correctly. I'm just saying. Fellas, be careful, this car could morph into a homewrecker if you're not careful. Ladies, this will definitely get you a first, second, and third date with little effort. Just the other day, three of the wife's friends wouldn't let me out of a conversation about it. They all want a ride on the Pony Express. I told them that it'll happen but they just wouldn't drop it. Kept going on about how hot a car it is and how sexy they'll look in it. I'll follow up on this once I take ownership in around a month. Wow.

The Mudbones are on vacation. Yes the entire gang has headed south to North Carolina’s Crystal Coast (my 8-year-old wants to know why it’s called “North” when we go south to get there). This will explain the sudden flurry of blog entries.

A couple of days before we left, Mrs. Mudbone asked me “Are you two planning on taking the Camaro to the beach?” I told her that it had been discussed:) She uttered a complaint about having to drive her ‘Burb all the way with the rest of the kids (my daughter brought a friend). I told her not to worry, I’d drive the ‘Burb with her and let Mudbone, Jr. bring "Kermit". We left town at about 10:00am and Mandy (the GPS) said we had just over 7 hours to our destination. We rolled on down to I-95 and turned south. After about 200 miles, we’d reached Roanoke Rapids, NC and decided to stop of a quick lunch. During the break I asked Mudbone, Jr. how he was enjoying the ride. He said it was heaven. I believe him. I mentioned that I might enjoy some seat time, as the only real extended trip I’d ever taken in an F-body was the night I drove "Jennifer" home from North Caroline when I bought her. That was not much fun as it was a cold, dark January, and the headlights had been adjusted to keep an eye on the front tires – again another story. Mudbone, Jr. offered to drive the ‘Burb and give me some time with "Kermit" (what a good son!). Mrs. Mudbone said forget it, “You two drive the Camaro and I’ll drive the ‘Burb” (what a great wife!). Father and son dropped in behind the “Conestoga” with the car-top carrier, and mom dropped the hammer. I told you she was cool!

Traffic had thinned (it was awful in Virginia) and we settled in at around 80 MPH. The car is made for this. Driving "Jennifer" back and forth to town and periodic car shows never lets me really appreciate what these cars can do. Heading east at Wilson and then south towards Goldsboro for the turn east onto 70 was simply joyful. The car is rock-solid and according to Mudbone, Jr. is “the most comfortable car I’ve ever been in”. I agree, the seats in "Kermit" and terrific. I’d say they are better than Jenifer’s (which are the later 4th-gen styled seats. Mudbone, Jr. advised that the car pulls great in sixth-gear at highway speed. There’s no fanning the shifter, unless you want to, of course. We then hit a rain squall for a few miles, but never had to turn on the wipers. At speed, the rain just blew off the car. Very cool (I’ve only driven "Jennifer" about 20 miles in rain, so I was only a little familiar with this in practice). The last part of the trip on 58 east (two-lane, middle-of-nowhere) was a blast, so much so that Mudbone, Jr. said it was time for a “Chinese Fire Drill”. I didn’t complain and first chance I had, I pulled over for the switch. We fell in behind a C4 convertible, between us and the “Burb for the rest of the trip. We finally pulled into Emerald Isle across the bridge in the late afternoon sun. Pure joy.

I am so glad that we bought this “driver car”. I’ve wanted to take my Camaro on vacation every summer since I bought it, but I’ve never been able to manage it. Truth be told, I’d have been miserable driving "Jennifer" through the rain on the Interstate. Driving Kermit through the rain was fun. I guess he might be a frog after all.

Mudbone, Jr. offered up a good suggestion a few weeks ago, while we where sitting around in the garage. He said, “Dad, we need to name our cars something cool.” I think that’s a great idea. He told me about a guy with two hot rods – one black and one red. The guy named them Veronica and Archie, which sounds totally cool to me.

I have owned three metallic green vehicles in my life. The first was a 1979 GMC 4x4 pickup, that I got new back when I was farming. I kept that truck until I got married and went off to college. It had been modded out the wazoo, and I used it to compete in street stock truck pulls (yeah, I was that guy). My next green vehicle was our 1994 Toyota xTraCab. We still use that truck on the farm, and Mudbone, Jr. is going to drive that one back to school this fall. The last green vehicle was my 2004 Z71 Avalanche that was totaled in a near-head-on back in 2007. That truck saved my life and the lives of my partners, but that’s another story for another day.

Anyway, it hadn’t occurred to me, but I guess I like green vehicles. This Polo Green Camaro is no exception. I simply love this color. The paint on our ’95 is a teensy bit rough, but don’t worry, it won’t be forever. Now don’t get me wrong, I have no plans to create another car I can’t drive, but I do plan on fixing the major flaws.

Back to the names. Following the storyline of Veronica and Archie, I figured I’d focus on something that speaks to “green”. The first thing that came to mind is “Kermit”. It’s kind of cute, but doesn’t quite convey a sense of power and authority. We’ll see if it sticks.

I then moved on to the 30th. What to name a car a like? In a way, it already had a name (The 30th), but that just doesn’t seem cool at all. I kept thinking, “…thirty, thirty, what goes with thirty”? Finally a name hit, but I did not speak it our loud. During another garage session, I asked Mudbone Jr, what name he thought of when he thinks of thirty, and he said the exact same thing I said – Jennifer (after Jennifer Garner in “13 Going on 30”). Now I know, "Jennifer" is not all power and authority either, but so what, THAT GIRL IS HOT.

"Jennifer" it is.

Well, last blog, I said I might be taking a road trip, and I was serious. I’d been scouring Craigslist for months, looking for an unmolested LT1 Camaro that could be a driver car. The 30th is fun, but having a nearly perfect car that has some rarity has its drawbacks – you hesitate to drive it. We finally found a candidate about 60 miles away, in Winchester. It is a ’95 Z28 M6 in Polo Green (yes, with T-Tops!). It is a one-owner car in very good shape with about 80K on the odometer. Lynn and I went to look at it and struck up a good deal with the owner who’d placed an order for a new ’10 2SS – nice!

I drove half way home and then turned it over to Lynn for the rest of the trip. We both enjoyed driving, but neither one of us really pressed it, since we were getting used to the 6-speed. The whole skip-shift thing was totally new to us, and we didn’t know what to make of it. (I’ve since gotten very comfortable with it and find it pretty unobtrusive.)

When we got home, my daughter (17) saw the car pull up. The kids had no idea where we had gone so when “some black sports car” pulled up, it was a surprise. Mudbone, Jr. came out for a look and was pretty excited about what was now in our driveway. After providing the required parental instructions, I told him that he could take it for a drive. He came back with a fairly wide grin (I know the feeling).

Some are probably thinking, wow, that Mudbone, Jr. is a lucky dude. Some others (the older guys) are thinking I must be nuts to put a car like this in the hands of a young man. Well, I haven’t completely lost my mind. The car is registered to me, and I say when and where it goes. As well, Mudbone, Jr. is a very level-headed guy for a nineteen-year-old – way more so than I was at that age! We have an arrangement in our family that breeds trust and responsibility. We tell the truth with one another under all circumstances. Mudbone, Jr. is the oldest, so he’s blazing the trail for his sister and brother. But so far, he has never given us any reason not to trust him completely. Has he always been a perfect angel? What do you think? Of course there have been “teachable moments”, but nothing that hasn’t led to positive growth. All I can say is this environment of honesty makes it much easier being a dad.

Time will obviously tell, but so far, I am pretty impressed with the way Mudbone, Jr. treats the car. He’s been asking questions about driving and launching that tell me we are going to have to take the car down to the local track for some “educational testing”. I think a new clutch may be in the cards:)
