Post Uhm... SSR replace f-body? WTF?

Alright I rember awhile back that the SSR was going to be what fills GMs market that the f-body was in.

Stuff formoctober Car and Driver

lets see
-Its ugly
-has a 290 Hp 325lbs. torque v8 but it weighs 4600 lbs. and runs a 16 flat in the 1/4 mile with stock 3.73 gears.
-gets 14mpg in the city, 18mpg on the highway
-and only cost $40k

Quick! get me to a dealer.

this thing is slower then a v6 Camaro, with 50% more power then a normal v6 f-body, and gets worse gas mileage on the highway then the average v6 f-body gets in the City, while racing. Was said ot have little cargo area and p[oor ahauling capadilites.

I think the Aztek will make more money then this.

Man, I thought GM was actually going to build something cool when I first read about the SSR. I guess the same person who signed on the line to scrap the F-body is the same person who made the final decision on the SSR - GM did real well by hiring them!

F'n GM.

Poor customers.

If only they knew...

Don't you just love the way GM went from real cars to trash? Look at the new GTO. It's ugly! It looks like every other car on the road! Yea, at least it's rear wheel drive and has a V8. Just give it time, soon it'll have an EcoTech badge on the side. I've seen alot of prototype cars lately from several auto makers and their all ugly pieces of plastic junk. The people that build them even admit theire only built to last until the warranty is up, most of them don't evem make it that far anymore.

You know, if I did'nt love Trans Am's so much, and did'nt want an LS1 so bad after I pay the LT1 off, I'd probably get a Rust...I mean mustang. Only because the only import I'd consider would be a TT Supra, and I don't want to think about the cash I'd sink into it.

No! No! NO!

The SSR is a TRUCK. The f-body is a CAR. One was not meant to replace the other.

Moving to the 5th gen discussion where this might be better suited.

It has actually been said several times over that SSR is NOT meant to be a F-Body replacement...

It is an entirely diffrerent concept, and not in the same price range....

It does not weigh 4600 pounds. The truck it is based on, fully optioned, with Four-Wheel Drive might weigh 4600 pounds.

Don't be suprised if it gets a lot more potent drivetrains after the first year.

It isn't an F-Car. It is more like the Dodge Viper or Prowler. An image vehicle.

Not everyone thinks it is ugly as evidenced by the number of people who have lined up to buy them when they do finally get to dealers. Don't worry, GM will sell every one they can build and they won't be able to build enough of them.

According to the latest Car and Driver, the SSR will sell for around $38,500, weight over two tons(!), and do 0-to-60 around 7.5+ seconds. This thing sure isn't an F-body replacement, but it probably will be a Thunderbird slayer. I'm not in the market for one, but the SSR sure makes now-deceased Plymouth Prowler look sick.

Common sense reveals that the two vehicles have different audiences and that the SSR is not meant as a Camaro replacement.

I am jsut going by some stuff I red awhile back... jsut that it might be replacing the market that the f-body had, maybe they thoght they could produce ti for less.

Either way, few pages away form this "thing" is the PT cuiser GT, goes for $22k, has a 215 hp turboed 4 banger, runs the 1/4 at 15.7, they said it shoudl do slightly better in manual trnasmission.

Isn't that the motor thats in the newon R/t that is ocming otu some day turbod 2.4L making 215hp.

GM still doesn't get it. It's been known for some time that the SSR can't even hold a candle to the Lightning performance-wise, so what does GM do to compete in the sporttruck segment, give us an upcoming overweight Silverado SS that'll do no better, unless it's snowing or raining and you hope that the AWD can make a difference. 10 years ago GM had something in it's arsenal that was way more potent than either the SSR or SS, the Syclone/Typhoon.
