Hmmm, interesting. At 3473 sales the CTS (which I very much like) is touted as a succesful model for GM. At 5003 sales the Camaro/Firebird is a failure.
Yes,yes I know the St. Therese plant was under utilized. Perhaps they will make a more realistic assessment of the market next time.

There isn't much of a positive where your sales figures are flattened by Corvette.

I wonder how many of those Mustang sales are to rental companies? I don't think you'll see CTS's as rentals.
The low fbody sales don't surprise me considering that the end of production is a well known event. I'm sure GM didn't try very hard to sell more than this.

Up here, Budget has lots of rental Mustangs-
V6 coupes and verts and GT verts.
Last year they had Z28 verts- I rented one- ton of fun! Too bad none this year
No CTS's though- too bad i'd like to try it out. Nice to see the CTS is second!

But the Monte only sells 4400 units compared to Fbody's 5000? It would seem to me that, given fbody combined sales are in excess of newer, more expensive to develop vehicles like the monte and CTS, and the fact that the fbody tooling was paid off several years ago, that the whole "lagging sales killed the Fbody" story is total B.S.
I'm convinced at this point that it had everything to do with labor relations at St. THerese and nothing to do with sales. Yes 60,000 units a year sucks compared to Fbodies of the past, but they are a money maker for GM nevertheless. I think the St. Therese plant is too expensive for GM's tastes, yet the union contract had them stuck there building Fbody....a car that was profitable when facilities costs were not involved. Yet, I'll admit, even if its profitable, you can only continue selling an aging car so long, so production for the 4th gen had to end. But, GM simply lets the car die...no plans for a new one, because if there were an '03 new model, it would have to be built at St. Therese.
So, they are waiting out the contract. I bet we don't hear of any "official" plans for a new car until that contract dies.

That being said, GM should have had an approved 5th gen ready to roll, and come out as a 2003 model. This didn't happen, I'm assuming, thanks to the Zarella regime.
