Rumor has it that the CTSi prototype just got back from Nurburgring.
GM sent two cars with it for benchmarking...the BMW M3 and BMW M5...WOW!!!

Unhappy

I guess we finally got our version of the Commodore SS. Too bad it's going to cost 40 grand.

Unless Cadillac is going to eventially put a supercherged Northstar V8 (currently not likely), I don't think that when we do get RWD sedans at Chevrolet & Pontiac that they will have LS1s (would be CTSi, but 10 grand less).

Thumbs up

CTSi with manual tranny only? Wow, not too bad, i bet it'll be T56.

That's actually pretty good, it should be in mid to high 13's in the quarter mile. Does anyone know how much those things weigh? I'd imagine they are heavier than fbodies.

According to carpoint, 3568 for the auto, and 3509 for the manual. That's less than a Z28 convertible.

This thing should be good for LOW 13's, especially if the LS1 gets some tweaking between now & then.

Wait a second...

Bob Lutz was quoted as saying that the LS6 was going to go into the CTSi. But now it seems like only the LS1. So what gives?
And also an M3 is right behind a Z06 in all categories, right? So an LS1 won't give enough scoot to the CTSi keep up with the M3. I wouldn't know about the M5 since it is heavier. But it would seem like the LS6 would be neeed, not the LS1.
So what gives?

An M3 has a 333 HP 6 cylinder, which makes it no match for a Z06. In fact, an LS1 powered CTS will have no problems with the current M3, with the monster torque advantage that the LS1 probably has. Lutz did originally say the LS6 would be in the CTSi, wonder what happened there...

I wonder too...
All the press reports seem to categorize it as a 350 hp LS1.

The motor in the prototype however is an LS6 with a ZO6 spec T56 tranny.

is that for the 6? if so the LS1 car would weigh another 100-150lbs more.

Well what I meant by the M3 being right behind the Z06, although I'm probably off due to the info, was that I remember a Motor Trend issue a while back where they tested an M3 versus a Z06. The M3 kept up extremely well with the Z06 even though the Z06 won. It was that article where even though the Z06 spanked the other two cars, they called the M3 the winner because it was a better "everyday car" with a back seat. I know the Motor Trend drivers can't even drive a riding lawn mower. Note taken. But anyways, I've heard of Z06's going near 12.0 flat in the quarter although it seems better to take out the perfect driver and stick in there a 12.3 time. I'm not sure what an M3 does in the quarter though. But I'm wondering if the M3 kept up with the Z06 in some way, then take away 50 horses and add in some weight to the car and you have the CTSi. I'm wondering how much faster it would be. True, 333hp versus 350hp. But also keep in mind you have to shift the CTSi at 6000 rpms while the M3 will scream up to 8000 rpms. That makes up some of the difference. So really, can anyone answer this dilema?

BTW. What did happen to Lutz putting in the LS6? Can anyone clarify that?

first of all, the CTSi will be aiming its shield at the M5 not the M3.

This would be a good way to test the new Corvette "LS2", now wouldn't it? Hmmm...
