CD Lightning Lap 2012

Lightning Lap 6

ZR1 is back, they test some SUV's with the SRT8 and X5M. Boss 302 tries to get the award for most performance value.

Re: CD Lightning Lap 2012

Some interesting things from the article:
  • The BMW X5 was quicker around VIR than the 335is (and the RS4 and M Coupe tested in '07). It was also just 0.1s behind the GT500 from '06.
  • VW Golf R is 7.8s a lap faster than the Golf R32 from '08 with a modest 6HP advantage.
  • BMW 335is and Z4 sDRIVE35is both had versions of the 7 speed dual clutch gearbox which apparently is not good. It resisted shifting, moreso in the Z4 where it would apparently not shift if there was any lateral acceleration. Perfect for a sports car...
  • Challenger SRT8 392 lopped 6.9s off the '08 car's time. A bit more power and suspension revisions. Charger SRT8 is only .7s behind despite having an automatic transmission.
  • BMW 1-Series M ran 3:06.6 which is of course slower than an M3 (3:05.4 from '10).
  • Boss 302 Laguna Seca is very good value, and apparently one of the most fun cars to drive. Partly due to the side exhaust. It was 1.2s a lap faster than last years GT500. They note that the Grand Sport beats it on performance per dollar though.
  • Audi TT-RS is unfortunately quick. 3:04.8... or .2 behind the Audi R8.
  • Cayman R is 0.1s slower than the Boxster Spyder.
  • Second best car this year was the GTR. 2:53.2. Apparently the 2012 is a bit more fun to drive than the '09. Not as prone to understeer. They didn't have the even slightly more powerful 2013 for VIR.
  • ZR1 wins this year, but is still behind the two Moslers and the Viper ACR. Tested with the Cup tires it ran 2:50.7 or 1.1 faster than the car with PS2's. They were afraid at some points and lifted throttle apparently.

Surprised this hasn't gotten any response. Way to go Chevy for dominating every section of the lap.

Yeah. Ah well, I figured some might not have seen it yet. It's one of the more interesting things CD does, at least to me.
