That new 3.0-litre diesel packs three turbochargers: two small ones and a larger turbo. The lower inertia of the smaller turbos is used to deliver "razor-sharp responses" according to BMW, while the larger one is tuned for maximum pressure when you really feel like opening the taps.

As a result, it produces 381bhp and 546lb ft of torque. In the M550d XDrive, that equates to a 0-62mph time of 4.7 seconds (the new M5 does it in 4.4), a top speed of 155mph, a combined mpg of 44.8mpg and emissions of just 165g/km

Freaking bad ***. I love the turbo diesels I rent overseas. They run out of air at the top end on the autobahn, but they didn't have 3 turbos either.
Just imagine a Cobb Tune with one of these.

Re: BMW M Cars to get tri-turbo diesel
Was in France in '01 and rode around in a Vectra with a 2L turbo diesel (at least I think that was the displacement). Certainly sufficient for driving around and getting up to 80mph on the freeways.
Friend in college had a Golf turbo diesel. That thing got around well and was very stingy on the fuel.
Point is proliferation of diesels into cars in the US wouldn't be a bad thing.

Re: BMW M Cars to get tri-turbo diesel
I assume that 44.8 mpg is measured in British gallons. Is that correct? so 37 MPG in US numbers? {still impressive for a 381 HP and 546 flbs car)

Re: BMW M Cars to get tri-turbo diesel
Well we need to build some awareness over here somehow. Diesels are getting more and more popular in smaller vehicles in the US so hopefully we'll see more in the future.

Re: BMW M Cars to get tri-turbo diesel
Properly running modern diesels don't. I don't think you'll see any black smoke coming from one of these BMW diesels. At least not stock.

Re: BMW M Cars to get tri-turbo diesel
That's one of the problems about selling diesels in North America. Too many people believe they're still noisy black smoke spewing slugs. (This is one reason I love new BMW TDI commercials on TV.)
Only true turbo diesel purists and real auto enthusiasts realize they're none of that and that small turbo diesels are the best combination of fuel efficiency and performance.
