New 2009 Camaro Offers Utility, Capacity, Some Sportiness

January 6, 2008. Chevrolet today debuted the fifth generation of the long-awaited Camaro. The first release of the new General Motors Sport Car Utility Mobility Vehicle (SCUM-V) platform, the Camaro was designed to meet the needs of both enthusiasts and focus groups wanting a more "practical" vehicle.

"Due to the acceptance of ‘alternately styled’ vehicles such as the Subaru SVX and the Toyota Matrix, and the lack of stigma attached to four-door vehicles, we were comfortable with taking a new approach with the Camaro," said Vlad Escuse, Director of Brand Management for General Motors Performance Utility Vehicles (PUV). "With the departure of our last ‘car’ engineers, we assembled a new, young team to tap into the ‘hot topics’ of today."

The new Camaro team, average age only 28, designed a vehicle with industry-leading versatility. The new Camaro offers 8.8" of ground clearance, and removable* mass ballasts that increase overall weight to 8,400 lbs.

"With mass ballasts on, the new Camaro can still manage sub-10-second 0-60 times**, and will vaporize a Honda Insight on contact," said Dirk Weldon, Chief Engineer for the SCUM-V platform. "Providing industry-leading safety and—performance."

The Camaro is powered by a camless, 2.8 liter 4 cylinder engine with turbocharger and nitrous. Engine output is 545 horsepower at 11,500 RPM and 121 ft-lb of torque at 8,400 rpm. Fully 10% of the total torque is available as low as 4,000 RPM.

"It was hard not usin VTEC, yo," said Brad Grift, 24, Powertrain Engineer. "With so much street cred and all, I was pushin all the way." But he acknowledges the superiority of the camless motor. "Plug in, change the valve lift, and all that . . . and with NAWS on board & hackable boost curves, it’s tuner dreamz."

General Motors has planned to open over 800 NAWS-2-GO outlets nationwide to support the new Camaro.

The new Camaro departs from tradition by offering 6 doors, three per side. The rear doors are motorized and open to 42" to accept what is becoming the standard American weight profile. A small motorized ramp accommodates people who can’t step up into the vehicle, providing access for all. Other industry-leading features include an integrated bike rack and optional trailer that fits an entire youth soccer team and their equipment.

*Removing requires a federal safety exemption, per section E-356 of the Uniform Utility Vehicle Transportation Code.
