Ditched the puter, how to make speedo work? (91RS)

Just like it says. I went with a different engine, carbed, and the computer controls arent being used anymore. I have all the other gauges working fine, coolant temp, oil pressure, volts, fuel level and tach workin good. Just that dang speedo is left. I know it is normally controlled by the ECM which gets the signals from the VSS on the trans. Is there anyway to... bypass... the ECM and have my speedo work somewhat accuratly? Is there a package or dealie other than buying a aftermarket speedo from autometer (or any other place for that matter)

Thanks

Go to that site and purchase one of their "Cable-X" boxes. It converts an electronic VSS signal to a cable driven form that connects with a cable driven speedometer.

You have an electronic speedometer, so you'll either have to remove it and replace it with a cable driven one or...not have one. I don't know what else you could do.

I guess I don't have any experience going backwards from an electronic set-up, as it seems you're in the process of doing. I have a cable driven unit with a T56 and an electronic VSS signal, so the Cable-X box works well for me.

Good luck.

Would it be possible that it doesnt need the actual ECM though? It was a 5.0 v8, so it has the speedo buffer before the cluster... ?

I goddamned hate it when the board software prevents me fro posting (it hasn't been 90 seconds yet) and when I click back my message is gone.

Anyway... I was under the impression that the ECM did not provide the signal to the speedo, that the signal came directly from the VSS, and that signal was also paralleled to the ECM.

It may be that way in some years, but in my '91 the VSS sent a signal to the ECM (used for the 115mph speed limiter and perhaps other things) and the ECM drove the speedo. AFAIK the signal is totally different and you can't just wire the VSS to the speedo.

Did you leave the computer hooked up? Theres no reason to cut it out. By leaving the computer in everything will still work but just turn on the SES light, so just take out the bulb. Makes it easy to change back too.

Aaaahhhh muhahaha... nope I didnt cut any of the wiring, because I will be putting the old (which will be rebuilt later) motor back into the car for emissions so everything will be there... just tucked away. Maybe I should have just tried that part out with leaving it connected so the speedo will work. Thanks.
