Can someone tell me the specs for an original points distributor? I need dwell specs and point gap specs. Also plug gap and type would be helpful. Oh yeah timing specs also :)

You time it with the vacuum advance hose pulled right?

Thanks alot for the help

Yeah pull the vacuum line and plug it, you can tell which end to plug it at. Also what engine do you have? diff timing specs for diff engines

For stock 327/275:

Plug gap = .035
Point gap = .016-.018
Point dwell = 28-32
Timing:
Manual trans = 0 Top Dead Center
Auto trans = 4 B.T.D.C.
Vacuum line disconnected and plugged.

No kidding 0TDC, I have it at 8 right now
Any tips on tuning the rebuilt Quadrajet on there, or choke

All equipment is original on the motor

Thanks for all the help so far

Thanks for all the help so far They tend to run better a little advanced. To set the Q-Jet on my '68 I used to turn both air/fuel mix screws 1/4 turn ahead of "set". (i.e. 1/4 turn clockwise.) Then I'd adjust the idle screw so it idled just at 1000 rpm. (Do this in neutral on a MT, "D" on an AT.) The stock range I believe was 800-1200 rpm. (Although that's just from off the top of my head so you might want to check that.)

That was all on 327/PG with Edlebrock Performer and OEM 750-cfm Q-Jet.

FWIW, I also used to index my plugs. I highly recommend this on a fresh motor.... on a worn motor it might not matter much if the plugs have never been indexed before.

It does have a manual trans. can I use the method of using a vacuum gauge and adjusting air/fuel mixture screws to obtain the highest vacuum

Yep.....that will work as well as adjusting to get the highest RPM at idle.

If your not pinging at 8 degrees of timing, leave it there. Of course, this depends on what gas you're using.

I'm running 94 in it, is that okay. It's the 10.25 to 1 motor, so I figure she should be good.

This is the problem I'm having. With it set to 8deg. BTDC, it runs alright, likes 10deg better. When you get on it in first it will bog, you have to feather it until it gets some rpms, and in this time it may backfire also. Thing is, if it is set higher than 8btdc, it will not start when it gets warm, basically like a car with too far advanced timing.

Dwell is set to 30. I'm not sure what else to look at right now. I mean if I actually set it to 0deg tdc, it almost does not want to start.

Any ideas?

Thanks alot

The bog you're describing is most likely the quadrajet. They are notorious for it.

Leave the timing at 8 and look into the carb.

This is a freshly rebuilt carb. I purchased this car from a collector for 15k. Everything has been gone through, frame off and all OEM.

I understand the carbs don't have a good rep, but if fresh, it should be fine. Also, that would not explain my hard starting issue when it gets to operating temp

Anymore suggestions
