mr00jimbo 03-21-2003, 03:01 PM I cant decide which one i want more!!! The manual would be soooo fun and all, but i dotn like dealing with it sometimes. wouldn't the M6 give more freeway punch? But the A4 with a stall convertor and shift kit woudl own from a dead stop. Ahhh can't decide. :(
Do any of you regret your manual trannies? Are they stronger than the automatic? How is the clutch?
irocz383 03-21-2003, 03:07 PM I'm in the process of changing out my 700R4 for a T56...
The T56 can handle 450 ft/lbs from the factory while the 700R4 can anly handle about 275.
Mcleod clutches seem to be the clutch of choice for the T56 owners on the board. Thats the one I'm getting. Apperantly the street twin will hold upto 1000 HP's. I've also heard people say the tranny will break before this clutch slips...
JD30thZ28 03-21-2003, 03:08 PM I have an Auto although sometimes I wish I had a 6 spd, I may do a conversion in the future but the Auto is definately fun from a stop, I need to get my hands on a cheap Vig 2800 and make some serious launches :D
silicuda 03-21-2003, 03:35 PM Auto tranny with special tuning is best for drag from what i've heard... makes it easy if you are not the best driver..
Manual is the way to go, and can beat auto if you are a pro driver and can shift like the pros..
by the way, i have not heard of TipTronic in any camaros/firebirds YET... do they even exist?? i dont think so... so they shouldbt be an option on your poll..
if you want to get fancy with tranny's there is SMGII which is actual manual transmission but the clutch is controlled by hydraulics.... just like F1 cars...

I have one coming in the mail. :D
450USD shipped... used of course.
I have an auto (obviously)... but sometimes I wish I had a manual. When I went looking for a car, transmission was not on top of the list of priorities. I just wanted an LT1 powered Trans Am, black or polo green with t-tops. Just so happened that I found an auto first. Also, from what I have heard the autos are not as strong as the manuals that come in these cars. Just need to switch that over to a th400 with a gear vendors overdrive and your worries about strength would be over. ;)
mr00jimbo 03-21-2003, 04:02 PM Well, I put the tiptronic there for people with other kinds of cars. I hate it when people with tiptronic say "it's like driving manual"
NO IT'S NOT!!
This kid at school says "yeah, i'm learning to drive tiptronic tomorrow"
LMAO learning to drive tiptronic?!
ollie-99 03-21-2003, 04:39 PM i gotta standard
kal2k 03-21-2003, 05:04 PM i got a 6spd, and love it no problems driving it what so ever.
Camaro ChriSS 03-21-2003, 05:17 PM I have an A4, but I used to be a manual-biased person. Now however, I love the automatic. Only once in a blue moon do I miss the manual. Its worth having the A4, IMO. But, you have to put up with all the fools who look at your car and say "Oh. Its just an automatic. My brother's 6-speed is way faster." Sure dude.
There's tradeoffs for each choice.
silicuda 03-21-2003, 05:29 PM SMG is the answer to all tradeoffs :P
Both my cars are 3 speed autos, and I like it that way :)
oldschool 03-21-2003, 08:04 PM It's much cheaper to go faster with an Auto...
In Auto form, my car (with ET steets) would probably go 12.1 @ 111mph.
My car = M6, 10 bolt and street tires will go 12.9 at 112 mph.
The auto is WAAAAAAY easier on the rear end and if I ever want to go any faster than what I'm already going, I need a 12 bolt or 9 inch. I've heard of the stock rear in an auto car going low 11's high 10's...with a few extra re-inforcements
Andy
NiteRider 03-21-2003, 08:38 PM I love standard, if our cars were 5 speeds i'd probably go auto but how can you turn down a 6 speed.
OneFlyn95z28 03-21-2003, 08:38 PM I have over 85km on my A4 and I am stuffing over 500Ftlbs TQ and 500HP into it. When I auto-x I push a button and it is full manual. Last time I went the only 4th gen faster was a race prep on race rubber to my dead street tires. 1.2 sec faster on a 1:1x minute layout.
The M6 is fun but I drive my car as a comuter also and having the 2nd worse traffic in the USA it makes the trip nice :D
It's a very personal choice - to me, the ideal sports car has always been a standard vert to others it's a hard top auto and for others something in between.
Sounds like your heart isn't set on one over the other, that will come with maturity :)
I've know what I wanted in my car for over 20 years, got the car, now looking for the sexy female 20 year old co pilot  Applications welcome...
Steve in Seattle 03-21-2003, 09:21 PM I would have NO problem driving a 4L60E... easier on the drivetrain, torque converter launches, instant downshifts on the highway ;) you know why, and of course the abilty to program two separate shift tables (gramma mode, and hardcore mode :D)...
but I throw 6-gears instead. :) I love the T56, although in stop/go traffic and at the staging line I defiently "notice" an auto would be easier. :)

I get that all the time...I just shake my head and say "whatever"...I like my A4

stevem 03-22-2003, 12:15 AM autos rule
plus when people say (espesially imports)its an auto then they laugh and when you hit the line and smoke em there is no better feeling
DoubleJ 03-22-2003, 12:33 AM I always preffered a manual 6-speed, but i drive a auto:D
Pandamonkey 03-22-2003, 01:01 AM I've never owned a automatic vehicle until I bought a 98 Blazer for my wife. It's a nice change to drive an auto now and then........it's a relaxing no brainer kinda thing.
OneFlyn95z28 03-22-2003, 01:28 AM BTW for all of you who are just damn sure driving a Auto is a "No brainer"?
Last time I let TWO 6spd guys drive my car it turned out to be more then they could handle :D
They had two lift three times to get 30 feet!
I just thought I would point out it really is not as easy as it looks ;)

Jason Dove 03-22-2003, 02:04 AM Mine was an Auto, then I had the M6 Swap done... I'm not disappointed in the slightest.
msquared 03-22-2003, 02:06 AM Ahhhh, the beauty of old school. I have a 4 speed... Manual! It can handle all the power i can throw at it! Gotta love it.
I do want a 6speed though. 1:1 on the highway sucks ass. Even with a 3.42 rear end.
Tweaked Zed 03-22-2003, 12:14 PM I like the T56, but I haven't broken it yet either. I'll have to decide when that happens if I go T400 or just get a viper mainshaft.

i would have to agree, i got a th350 with a 3000 stall in it, soon to be switched to a full manual reverse pattern valve body. i love it! the way i see it is you get all the advantages of a manual, the ability to change and pick the gears you want and not having to work a clutch all the time, plus you get consistantly quick shifts. and its cheaper and easier to save parts and to do work on them, less $$$. and a full manual reverse pattern is not that easy to use, i think it takes just as much skill to run one of those consistant and good as a manual, but to each his own i guess;) you just better be a damn good shifter to keep up to the auto:bow:
TopSpeedZ28 03-24-2003, 01:22 PM Got the A4, as tranny was secondary to the car when I was looking for it. My car is not too common, so I jumped when I found it... learning now that as I am older I prefer the auto trans because it flies when you need it to, otherwise you can peacefully pilot the Z in normal traffic without worrying about shifting. My car gets pretty good rubber grabbing second, and with the ASR off that can be a lot of fun! :D It's a personal choice, really. 10 years ago I would have been deadset on a M6.

That TC was for an LT1... the guy has an LS1 and bought the wrong converter. I think that is even a few bucks cheaper than I got mine for... doh.
JD30thZ28 03-24-2003, 07:30 PM Nice I will have to contact him ASAP :D Thanks
LT1Z28 03-24-2003, 08:25 PM LS1 TC is different then LT1 TC So make sure it is for a lt1 Johnny

Definitely an LS1 TC will not work in an LS1. Make sure it is LT1.
