anasazi 03-12-2003, 04:21 PM well trying to get the y-pipe off we snapped a manifold bolt :(
how do we fix it? this has gotta happen often judging by how friggin rusted those bitches are. we even soaked them with pblaster too
Mr. T's Z 03-12-2003, 05:59 PM I warned you... LOL I have mine if you need them the only way is to replace it.
Tyler
MustangEater82 03-12-2003, 07:20 PM I have a drill... if it will help...
Whistler 03-12-2003, 07:44 PM You need to drill the manifold and tap it out to install new studs.Unfortunately this means removing the manifold. Be sure to soak the bolts that hold the manifold to the head in penetrating oil too.
anasazi 03-12-2003, 09:05 PM well its not flat against the manifold, its far enough out for vice grips
the guy at the exhaust shop said that if its got enough for vice grips he can heat it up red hot then pull it out... otherwise he can remove it by drilling and tapping.
actually we had the car idle for prolly 15 minuites, let the PBLaster heat up and burn off and the car get up to temperature. it doesn't seem to be leaking, throttle response seems fine. if it doesn't start leaking while driving then i'll order some cheap shorties or something and put them in, i really don't wanna rip out the stock manifold and then just put it back in.
heh, on top of all this crap on our way to discount auto we got pulled over cause my friend had a suspended license cause the insurance company fouled up, almost got arrested.... this is a lot of crap to go through for just a gutted y-pipe :)
oh well... i'll see how it drives home and then drives tomarrow afternoon. if it opens up and starts leaking then i'll take it to the muffler guy and have him fix it... otherwise i'll be ordering like hooker shorties or something
Kwiksilverz28 03-12-2003, 09:09 PM Weld a nut to the stud. The heat and good wrench surface will work. I have a stick welder at my house.......
anasazi 03-12-2003, 09:57 PM well its leaking, i can't hear it, but at idle the RPM's lope and acceleration is crappy, missing, etc... throttle response seems fine, just missing now, sucks.
so i'm going to drive on it till like friday AM and take it to the muffler shop where they'll drill out the bolt. not sure what i want to do after that... i'm sorta kinda afraid to do the rest of the bolts cause this was the ONLY bolt in a easy-to-get-to position... maybe its just my car's time for headers, huh? but then i'd be afraid of breaking one into the head, how does one fix that?
anyways here are the pics

Man, you gotta soak those beeches real good....like overnight and I mean SOAK. How do you fix breaking one off in the head? Simple, just like the "time to buy headers" priciple....that means its time to buy heads from me;)
Face it bro, you car wants them. This isn't about you anymore, its for the good of the car. IT SPELLED IT OUT FOR YOU. Having a stumbly idle meant that it wants a nice cam to go w/ those new heads and headers.....All installed by me of course. I'll do the install for $400.00
Kwiksilverz28 03-12-2003, 11:14 PM Do like I said, and do all three. Headers are if you want them. A good machine shop could get that stud out no problem....

lol well i don't think a broken stud on my exhaust manifold is my car begging for heads :)
although, if i had the money, i would definantly... but its going to be interesting paying for the exhaust guy to fix my stud on the stock stupid manifold while its still in the car. if he doesn't think it can be removed while still on the car, then its time to possibly get some shorties, although most headers seem to cost the same ...
but yea, we soaked them real well but we didn't let it sit too long, maybe an hour or two... thought it was ok cause the bolts on the cat came off easy as pie, but the first rusted on piece of crap on the manifold snapped right off.
oh well, running around with an exhuast leak shouldn't hurt it will it? i see posts online all the time about ppl with exhaust leaks and all is good once they fix them.

It looks as if foul play on the part of Mr. Downs may be helping his sales!
LT1Brutus 03-13-2003, 09:42 AM Foul play? I'm just trying to help him make his car happy. If I wanted sales I'd sell him a nitrous system, I make higher profits on those......Hey anazazi, a nitrous kit would really compliment those new headers!
anasazi 03-13-2003, 02:16 PM lol well i'm seriously thinking about some shorties or midlengths now because it aparently stopped leaking, lopy idle went away and its not any louder than it was before... i want a kit, something that all i gotta get is like gaskets and bolts, but i want it to come with the y-pipe.
jet-hot headers (aka hooker LT's) looks damn nice, but i don't have the funds to get a y-pipe made...
what are some good shorties or mid-lengths that come with y-pipes and don't break the bank? emissions would be a plus if i decide to drop out of UCF and move up north to a different school
MustangEater82 03-13-2003, 04:05 PM I'm telling ya, I have a handle of Jack, a power drill, a hammer and vice grips, we can it out!
can you JB weld a nut onto it and unscrew it?
Kwiksilverz28 03-13-2003, 05:16 PM The welding does heating and securing. Considering it is upside down, the JB Weld will run out anyways.
Worst case, heat the snot out of it with a blow torch, then try. The heating and cooling will expand and contract the metals at a different rate since they are not the same, and hopefully break the rust.
anasazi 03-14-2003, 03:56 AM i'm holding off for just a few days to see how it goes... cause i'm pretty set on probably getting some sort of headers now, so i don't wanna pay 100 bucks to get a stud fixed when its going to be ripped out soon anyways
MustangEater82 03-14-2003, 12:55 PM hey anasazi...
This sale is this weekend only.
You might want to check it out. :)
