17x8" wheels. What are my tire size options?

I don't want the speedo to be off too bad...

I was thinking 245/45/17's would work. How about 255/40's?

Any others?

Just out of curisoity (sp?) will a 255 even fit on a 8" wheel?

I got a 265 to fit on a 8" wheel, but I would go with the 245/45 cause it would look better on an 8" wheel and shouldn't throw your speedo off.

What kinda tire? I've got 235's on mine now but want to get a wider tire. And why would it "look" better?

Pepboy specials, Futura! It doesn't look right though. If you have a 16x8 I would go as far as 245/50, but on the 17x8 I would put 245/45 cause it looks perfect for that size rim.

If you go too wide of tire it tends to to make the side walls stick out and look fat. Doesn't look very sporty in my opinion.

What do you mean by it doesn't look right? Is the tire to tall on the side's? You proable could get a 35 profile or even a 30's

245/50/16's are stock tires for a Z. 275's, while they may fit, are not safe on an 8" wide rim. I have heard of people going with 255's on the stock wheels (16x8), but if you want to keep the speedo happy on a 17x8 rim, then you have only 245x45x17's as a choice.

I've ran 275's on 17x8's and 17x9's they fit fine on both cars.

245's are way too narrow when you get to a 45 series tire.

275's are only stock on SS's (and not on an 8" wheel), the stock Camaro tire is a 245/50/16 and on V6's without the "touring" or whatever that option is called they are actually 235's.

Please refer to the Chevrolet website below for proof:

http://www.chevrolet.com/camaro/index_features.htm
(click on Wheels/Tires)

275's are not even optional on any Camaro, except the SS which are standard.

The width of the tire does not change when you increase the diameter. So a 245 will still be a 245 no matter what the diameter and will maintain the same contact patch.

On the other hand, I completely agree that a 17" wheel looks better and should have 275's on it. Still, you can't safely put those on a 8" wide wheel. I guess my question would be, Clubbin, if there is 9" wide version of the wheels you want available? This would solve a lot of problems and would make the car look 100% better at the same time.

I can only get the wheel I am looking at in a 17x8" at this really good price.

I dont see how a 245/45/17 would looks skinnier than a 245/50/16 though

I worked at a tire store for 2 years and there is not going to be any problem with putting a 275 on an 8 inch rim. Going wider than that might cause the tread patch to buldge slightly and cause a drop off in handeling, however, the wider tire in no way makes the vehicle "unsafe". You have a greater risk of tire problems with too narrow a tire where the seal can be compromised. Point, the 275 looks and handels a whole lot better than a 245.

besides you thinking they look skinny, doesn't a 245 tire belong on an 8" wheel? I mean stock 16x8's have 245's. SS 17x9's have 275's. All 17x9.5 aftermarket wheels use 275's

I would go with the 245-45-17's since you dont want the speedo off to bad! That was the original question right?
