Anyone in dallas texas arealt4 fd 03-05-2003, 03:35 PM Know of any tracks that dont require some sort of multi thousand dollar initiation fee to race at? All_Z_Way 03-05-2003, 04:24 PM You can do some open track road racing at Motorsport Ranch (http://www.motorsportranch.com) . It is located south of Ft. Worth. I usually run with The Drivers Edge (http://www.thedriversedge.net) . There are several of us F-bodies that run there. This weekend several guys are running with the BMW club out there on both Satruday & Sunday. I will be out there Saturday...not running since I couldn't find tires in time, but I'll be spectating. If you get a chance you should come out to the track this weekend... it is free to watch. Also... we post a lot over at LS1.com (http://www.ls1.com) in the road racing section, since most of them are LS1 cars. I am just about the lone LT1 car. chuck 03-05-2003, 08:21 PM Like James said, there a number of us that run at MSR several times a year, and another subset of us that autox. lt4 fd 03-05-2003, 09:37 PM Im confused whats the difference between auto crossing and what you do at motorsports ranch? BTW I took a look at your site chuck, Love the videos, kickass driving man! chuck 03-05-2003, 10:24 PM Autox is a course set up on a large parking lot with orange traffic cones. It is also called "Solo II" racing. Solo because you should never be close to another car on course. You are racing the clock. Courses are typically 30-130 seconds, often closer to 60. Depending on the club, you will get 3-8 runs through the course. Cones knocked down or out of place are a 2 second penalty. Your best time + penalty counts for scoring. Speeds are often under 70 mph. I have only been to 2 autox ever that I had to go to third gear, and most are run entirely in second gear. Road racing is done on a road course, in close proximity to other cars. Speeds are typically higher depending on the track, but 110-140 speeds are not unheard of. Wheel-to-wheel road racing is like open tracking, without the passing rules and it is a timed, competitive event. This is what you see on Speed as events like the SCCA runoffs etc. Open track events are events where 20 or so cars on a road course, but they are non-timed, non-competitive events (for insurance purposes I suppose). There are passing rules that basically say if you catch someone and hang with them, they have to point you by at the next designated passing zone. Most open trackers (myself included) want to wtw road race, but cannot afford or justify the expense. Open tracking is a great way to learn vehicle control which will be later needed for wtw. At MSR, you would only be able to "open track" unless you club race with the Porsce club or BMW club (SCCA does not have events there). There is an autox video on my site. Look at the 1/5/03 Houston event. chuck 03-05-2003, 10:43 PM I just thought of something. You can actually see all three this weekend. BMW Club is having an open track event at MSR: http://www.lscbmwcca.org/motorsports/MotorsportHome.htm Equipe Rapid is having an autocross at Pennington Field in Bedford: http://autocross.com/er/ SCCA is having an event at TWS (college station) http://www.texasscca.org/ScrambleSched.doc There will be 3 F-bodies running at MSR this weekend, and James is coming out Saturday to socialize. There is a minor chance you could score a ride with an instructor. "Lesser" participants are not (usually) allowed to take passengers out. lt4 fd 03-05-2003, 11:22 PM ok I guess I cant race since I need to be inspected prior right? I would LOVE to score a ride with someone. I live about 10-20 miles north of dallas in Plano, anyone got directions? Ill have to check my work schedule too. what day did you say racesw will be and is it all day? chuck 03-05-2003, 11:41 PM It is too late to get into the BMW event, but you could run the autox at Pennington Sunday. Be there about 7:30 with some $$$, a little extra air in your tires and a willingness to learn. Your first event will be a little humbling, but you will learn a lot. lt4 fd 03-06-2003, 01:50 AM Anywhere I can get schedules to these sorts of events, may work on sunday. In case I can make it how much money should I bring, and where is pennington lol. Thanks:D chuck 03-06-2003, 06:46 AM For non-members, ER entry fee to an ER autox is $25 and $10 more if you want the extra 2 PAX runs. Equipe Rapide (http://autocross.com/er) SCCA (http://autocross.com/texasregion) All_Z_Way 03-06-2003, 04:14 PM Chuck's got you covered on the auto-x stuff. If you have Saturday off, then you should come out Motorsport Ranch and just watch. It is free to come out and watch the action. Check out my page below of some videos from MSR. lt4 fd 03-06-2003, 06:34 PM ok well Ill see when I work and try and get to motorsports ranch to watch and if im off attend the auto-x event. If I make it to the auto-x are things self explanitory, ive never been to one so... | ||
