Backfire?

I was out driving my Z last night, and when I got on it from a stop, I got what sounded loke a miss or backfire in the higher rpms as when as a kind of surge around 5500rpm. It was not pinging, and when I did it again, the noise was not there. I was curious if this is a one time thing, or if I need to look into something else? I do not get a miss at idle, nor do I get one in the mid rpm range (this is where the car is driven most, 2000-2500rpm), and it is not driven daily in the winter. I drive very rarely in the winter, and it is babied more often than it is rodded as well. Any input would be great, I was just wondering what this may be.
