If I gave you $2,000 to spend on wheels/tires

What would you guys buy and why,

I can't decide on wheels and tires, I don't even know if I would stick with 17's or do all 18's or do two front 17's and two rear 18's. What wheel size performs best for road racing?

Thanks!

What do you guys think of these, I can get them from local discout tire for $220-250 each (17x10 or 18x10)

(What size would you say these are 17's?)

http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/appea.../smoothie4.jpg
(these look like 18's in the front and 19's in the rear, maybe a bit too big)

keep in mind I'm eventually planning on a 1.25 drop.

I agree with Ms. cowgirl. Get 18's all the way around.

When I got my 17" zr1's over 5 years ago they were considered big. Now they are rather normal in terms of size. The tires that come witht that package aren't that great but you can always get drag radials if you go to the strip.

Well actually if you gave me $2000 for wheels and tires I would either ask for a little more or save up some more $$ for really sweet wheels. But for the price range you are looking the Boyd Smoothie look SWEET.

As for your second pic of the Camaro I believe the wheels are 18" all around.

For the Firebird in picture 3 those are 18" front and 20" rear. Too big in my opinion and look kind of goofy.

Definately get the same size wheels front and back for the best look IMO. The 18" would be my choice as they fit the car just right and the 19-20" tire selection is still very limited and costly.

If you really want an even bigger look stick with the 18" for tire size and selection but get some wheels with the reverse lip or also known as the "Fat Lip" style where they use a 19" center section for more BLING BLING like these Boyd Fury with the Fat Lip

Let us know what you choose.

I really like these Budnik Tillers with the Fat Lip .
Here is the Budnik Page . Be sure to ask Discout Tire for a quote as they will beat the list price if you like the Budniks.

But they couldn't build me the custom offsets I wanted so I ordered these instead iForged Aero 3 pc wheels. Lots of Bling but it will cost you plenty of Cha Ching!

Those are really great wheels.

What offsets are you having your wheels built to? What sizes should I have Boyd Coddington build if I go with 18'x10's. Just like you I love a deep wheel with a deep rim. A 1/2 inch more to the outside might be perfect. If I could have the wheels exactly line up with the top edge of the fendors that would be perfect.

SS LS1 MI and I both went with the IForged Aero, but i opted for 19x9.5 fronts and 20x10 rears!

damn i can't wait till i get'em!!!

btw, my 19x9.5 fronts and 20x10 rears cost me $2900.00 shipped to my door, that's including valve stems and centercaps.

here is a actual pic of one of my fronts 19x9.5

here is a pic of the same aero style wheel but on a BMW (pic is just for reference)
http://images.cardomain.com/installs...93_61_full.jpg

if i remember correctly, my fronts have a 2 1/2 inch lip and my rears are going to have a 3 inch lip......thanks to SS LS1 MI

Brady, when I talked with Boyd last month they said an 18 x 10" wheel with a 7 3/8" back spacing is what they would make. But I think a 18 x 10" with 7" Back spacing would be perfect (if I wanted a 10" wide wheel).

This would push the wheel out to the same place the 17 x 11" ZR1 wheels with the Grand Sport 50mm offset are that so many guys are running. Which is just about flush with the top edge of the fenders. That is the look I was shooting for btw.

Budnik could make me a 18 x 10 with the same back spacing as the Boyd's but I wanted either a 10.5" or 11" wide wheels. Neither of them coud do this with a Fat Lip profile as they purchase the rim barrels from an outside company who does not make the 18" Fat lip style in the width I would need. Plus the front whees would either be 18 x 8" (too narrow) or 18 x 10" (too wide for me) due the the limited fat lip barrel widths.

Plus I was told that the lip size would only be 1 3/4" wide with the 18 x 10" wheels! WTF? There was no way I was going to pay $2300 (Budniks) for custom made wheels with only a puny 1 3/4" lip. Screw that!

So working with the factory I ordered the iForged Aero's in 18 x 9.5" Front and 18 x 10.5" Rear sizes with a 2.5" lip in the front and a 3.5" lip in the rear! This is possible because Vince at iForged will custom cut the front and rear barrels along with the center mounting pad to get the maximum dish and lip size for any car. I could have got 18 x 11" rear wheels but the lip size would not be any bigger (as the 1/2" wider wheel would have to be on the inside) and it would have given me inner fender well rubbing with my new lowered suspension.

The iForged wheels are very nice but also quite expensive, so If you want to hang around the $2000 mark for wheels and tires then the Boyd Smoothies would be a great choice to look into. FYI the Boyd's I was looking at were billet wheels and not the cast ones like the Smoothies, so the back spacing and sizes will most likely be different than what I was looking into. Just give them a call and they will tell you justwhat they can do. They will even give you a few phone #'s of shops that will get you the best price. (lower than the prices on the Boyd website)

Good luck!

Question

So will the 18x10's fit all the way around without rubbing in front? If so what is the correct offset?

I'd go out and by some blanks with the correct back-spacing.. Probably like 18 x 9 in the front and 18x11 for the back.

Then sit down on my laptop and design a set of custom one-off rims, write the CNC code, and take them to my buddy who owns a Tool&Die shop with a CNC mill large enough and start making chips....

I wish I had a friend at a mill shop.

Anyway, I called up Boyd, they said that a 18x10 would be too wide for the front tires. I don't believe them though, I'll throw on my Dad's C5's 18x10's and see if those fit.

Anyway, how about 7 3/8" back spacing on the front and 7' on the back? 18x10's all around. Would those wheels sizes fit well?

If I remember correctly the IROC's, (my "85) had different offsets between the front and rear wheels.

Since your giving me the money, I'd sell my current wheels for the money for the tires and buy some used
