roll bar need help!!!!

ok i got a 95 z and i just ordered a 8pt roll bar from jegs and i got it yesterday. ok what i need to know is do all of the points have to go to the subframe or not. do i connect them from underneath or what. the directions i got are not very much help. so do i weld the plates to the subframe or can i weld some to the floor or what. thanks if you have any pics of installation or anything it might help thanks.

Get a NHRA rule book and read it, there are several ways to mount the bar/cage.

Look where we attached ours. This is a first-effort on a 4th-gen, but it looks okay. If you want to see more construction pics, just let me know.

Oh, and be sure and REMOVE the fuel lines and gas tank BEFORE you start any welding (duh).

ok well the pics helped a lot. but on the main hoop is that welded to just the floor or is that ti the subframes at all. and also the braces off the hoop is that just to the floor or the subframe. thanks. oh and the more pics the better

unibody car = must use 6"x6" 1/8th" plate to mount everything. They don't have to be flat and the tubing need not be centered on it. We felt the area where we put the main hoop was the best placement for what we had, was a strong location, but was tricky forming the plate. We eneded up cutting it some, welding part of it in, bending it, then welding up the seam. Worked great.

yeah i got all of the plates with the kit. i just need to know if i just weld them to the floor of the car or do i cut through the floor and go to the subframe somehow? but those pics did help alot. if you have anymore that would be great! thanks

There is no classic 'subframe' to weld to. The joined metal that makes up the structure is the 'frame'. Yeehaw...spot welds-r-us.

You weld the plates to the floor, which can be tricky in places because in some spots, the floor is kinda thin. Heat the plate first and drag the weld down to the floor. Do it otherwise and you'll keep blowing holes in the floor or you'll have your heat turned down so far that you don't get much penetration. Best to tack the whole cage first so that if adjustments need to be made...a little grinding and you have it apart. Don't let the heat build up too much in one area or you can warp the panel and ultimately get the whole thing mis-aligned.
