Hood Experts Inside Please

I have never posted in this thread and I really am not much of anappearance minded guy, so I really need soemhelp here.

Ia m swapping engines over to a SBC with a carb. The problem I have is that this engine is about 3-4" taller than the LT1. So naturally I need something will a taller cowl.

I was thinking of getting a lay-on type hood (the hood with the 12 little thumb screw on it for those that don't know) but I haven't been able to find one that I like.

I think that a straight up cowl looks pretty damn nasty, and I want to try and avoid that at all cost. I hear that somebody was making a replica SS hood, but it had a taller cowl on it.

Any and all help here is really appreciated, thanks in advance

first off how far forward is the cleaner? Generally you'll have to hack the cars cowl as well, I've seen it done without hacking the cowl, but usually it happens that way....just something to think about if you haven't.

but to answer your question, VFN is making a 4"raised SS hood, looks not very nice in my opinion, but we all know what this is good for LOL!!!

Harwood Also makes a cowl hood that goes with the body better than the old school version

i dont like the plain cowl hoods. but i like this one http://www.vfnfiberglass.com/site.htm its got the factory vents on it still and i like those better than the cowls with out. they also make a pin on hood if that what u wanted. so u dont have to use the factory hood latch.

they used to make the sting ray hood for our years i dont know why it isnt on their site anymore. they might still have some if u call them. i heard u could cut the back of them hoods do make them like a cowl. u can open up the fronts too. i think other companys call it the z-roc hood if ur gonna get it.

EDIT: im not an expert, but the guy at the bottem seems to be

I actually design and manufacture hoods for 4th gen f-bodies and have a few new designs in mind that may work for you. My background is primarily in raceweight applications and I'm sure that we could figure out a freindly combination between design style, pin-on/bolt-on, or pin-front with a hingeable rear setup.... you definately have more than one option with your application.... just give me a call if you like, my number is 717-752-0170... - Roger, U.S. Exotics LTD

I have a hood from www.usbody.com that is a ss/cowl style (ss front into a cowl) It is a couple inches taller than a stock ss type hood.

Roger,
Thanks for the info. Do you happen to have an e-mail address i could reach you at. I don't have much time to talk on the phone these days.

Red1,
Who's hood is that? Is it a lift-off type hood or does it still hinge and open like a factory hood? I see what looks like 4 pins holding it on the car.

everyone has an SS hood...(no offense to those who do)
but its true. So thats why i went with the Glasstek.

Dont get me wrong, i love the SS hood, but theres just too many of them. There are alot of cowl's as well, but just not around my area (at least that i see)

Uthinkso it is a lift off hood, those are 4 flush mount (Dzus) 1/4 turn fasteners holding it on. It's from USBody.com. I would have got a hinged hood but they were having a special last year and I picked it up for $100. Could not pass that up

I just went to the US Body site and I can't find any of their hoods that are the lift of style for our cars. Do you happen to remember the name of your hood? How much room did you gain over stock 2"-3"-4"??
