97TA-WS6-Con 01-29-2003, 01:28 AM OK the final date has been set for the "Great Black TA Build Up"
Saturday Feb 8th and Sunday Feb 9th.
What you get. Well.... Beer, lunch and dinner both days as well my eternal gratitude and a favour owed. Dinner will be steaks and fixings as prepared by Mike (thanks buddy). Also comraderie and possibly the opportunity to learn a little and in some cases gain a little confidance.
What has to be done?
Gas tank install and harness wired in
rear end and rear suspension
motor
tranny
exhaust
headers
blower
front end suspension and brakes
hood.
Anyone who wants, can stay overnight (I have pillows and beds and we can watch some DVD's. Matrix possibly but I have a bunch of other ones.
What you need to bring? I have a fairly good shop BUT would need a couple or three creepers and probably bring your own socket wrench if you have it.
Anyone is welcome, be it for the weekend or for an hour or two. It seems impossible to even dream the dream, but maybe even get the car running on Sunday. I think everything will be available to be able to start it. The tuning guys might want to take a look at the FAST computer and develop the first program. :)
There is no obligation to "work" when you are here but there is lots to be done.
Let me know if you can come so Mike and I can arrange enough food and bevvies.
Address is 6131 - 169 A Street Surrey. home number 576-8771. Easy to find.
SBainsTA 01-29-2003, 02:11 AM Hey, what do you know!!! You live up the street from me!!!! I'm @32nd and 168st. As far as I know, I'm free that weekend for a little bit anyways, so I will spare as much time as possible. I got a creeper, kinda beat up but it works, and I got some socket sets as well. Call me if you need anything else. Jacks, jackstands, etc. 604-808-5327. Call me or PM me and let me know what time.;)
Later
Sandeep
CoryM 01-29-2003, 02:18 AM I can probably make the 9th. I also have a pretty good selection of tools so if you need something let me know via a PM or email.
[edit] oh ya, I also have a beat up old truck (not keeping it long though) so if you need me to move some heavy or slimy parts let me know.
CoryM

97TA-WS6-Con 01-29-2003, 04:08 PM Everyone welcome. If you just want to watch and retrieve tools then thats fine but it would be a great opportunity for those with limited experience - and that includes me - to get to see what is involved in various projects and how long they take to do.

Zedzag 01-29-2003, 06:54 PM I should be able to swing by.
BennyBoy 01-29-2003, 10:01 PM Damn... if I lived over on the mainland I would be there in a heartbeat. :(
sleeperZragtop 01-29-2003, 10:03 PM ChriSS, Charles???? I know you guys like to eat...
LuCiFeR97Z28 01-30-2003, 02:58 AM I wouldn't mind coming to learn a thing or two. I have a set of tools that I'll lend out as well, just let me know in advance Shawn so I can dig them up.
Will there be any hard liquor for those that are capable of consuming REAL alcoholic beverages :D???
If I'm in town, I'll see you all there.
mr_muff 01-30-2003, 03:02 AM sounds like fun, ill probably show up might give ya some help. i know my basic stuff so that should be good for something :)

I have an extensive liquor cabinett - as I'm not a big beer drinker myself - and I think you should have no problem finding a single malt amongst the 12 I have that you can enjoy. Perhaps a McCallams?
irocz383 01-30-2003, 03:42 PM Shawn! Do you want air tools? I can bring over my compressor and air line. Unfortunatly all I have is a 1/2" drive gun. It'll do all the realy tough jobs like the torque arm!
Let me know. I wouldn't mind swinging by to check out the computer too.
Any other tools, let me know.
97TA-WS6-Con 01-30-2003, 06:49 PM Owwww power tools.
Well they certainly might be fun to have around but I'll leave it up to you.
Truth be said there ARE some big ugly bolts that need to go in. Especially the front suspension, control arms and the Spohn TA.
I think we will be ok with socket sets. Bring your own wrench though as they may be in short supply.
OH I DO need one very rare socket.
I need a 9/16's 1/4 drive socket for the nuts that go on the U-bolts of the driveshaft.
Anyone have that?
Thanks everyone for thos response. I think we will have a great Saturday.
in the meatime I will have to work like a SOB to finish polishing the exhaust system. I'm to pick up the chrome goodies on Feb 5th :-)
Another question. Do I need to use a shorty oil filter with the FLP's or the regular style OK? Payam? Matt? Mike?
irocz383 01-30-2003, 08:27 PM From personal experiance, I would use the 3/8" drive so you get more leverage. Just slap on a universal joint with a stubby extender and you won't have any problems clearing the wrench past the drive shaft and it'll be a lot easier to break those bolts loose.
97TA-WS6-Con 01-30-2003, 08:48 PM Ken
The DS if already off and the ONLY tool that would fit was a 9/16 socket 1/4 inch drive. The is no 3/8 socket or extension that was able to get a bite on the nut. I have an extensive socket set but I had to borrow a snap on socket from a neighbour to get the U-bolts loose.
zturbo 01-30-2003, 10:32 PM You do have a torque wrench correct shaun? The K member bolts are not that burly :) I personally don't use a ratchet for the yoke. I used a thin wall wrench.
Have fun with your install.
Steven
sideways_Into_3rd 01-30-2003, 11:41 PM for my u joint nuts i just use regular open end wrenches
for ur FLPs u need a short oil filter .. u should know this since u've had FLPs for a while and hopefully u've changed ur filter since then  :p
97TA-WS6-Con 01-31-2003, 01:07 AM Well for $30 I just as soon take it to a garage for an oil change :) Life's to short.
Thanks payam. I'll get a shorty one.
And any of you guys are WELCOME to try your wrenches and sockets. Mine don't work that is for sure.

... shaun shaun shaun ...
[/sideways shakes head]
for me, to get a shop to do my camaros oil change, is like going to a doctor to get the diaper changed on my baby (if i ever have one)
my cutlass though... i refuse to touch anything on it :D it'll either fix it self, or die trying  .. so far all the problems just fixed themselves :D

The cheapest I can change my oil is 42 bucks. This is for molbile 1 synthetic at wal mart. What oil are you having someone else put in for 30 bucks?

$30 Oil change? What kind of oil do you put in? ;)
I can just see the look on those Mr. Lube guys faces when they see Shaun's blown 383 T/A pulling up, I bet they look like this:
sideways_Into_3rd 01-31-2003, 06:47 PM shuan .. i just figuered out why ur motor went poop .. u put in $30 oil in ur car ?!? they probably water it down :D
Zedzag 01-31-2003, 07:26 PM When they refill the oil , they stick the hose right in the valve cover hole so you can't see the used oil going back in.:p And when you see your oil is really dark after a couple of days people tell you its "detergent oil" , its supposed to be that dirty:)
Charles9c1 02-02-2003, 12:54 PM Mike I'll be there to help out. Last summer I helped with gas tank install, engine and tranny install and tonnes of stuff on my car. All I did was help with grunt work. I think we need some Guinness for Saturday lol. Besides Shaun can keep up a conversation with me for hours. He has lots to say. LMAO and I saw the absolute desparation in his eyes over a year ago at the dyno day. Syntec can be had on sale at costco right now. $29.00 for 6 litres. Not a bad price at all. Also if you can take the bit larger filter, GM makes their own sythetic material filter (have for 20 years or so) that I read is the best damn filter you can put on a chevy. Same size as a PF35. Do not feed Mike any beans before the project starts please.......

CoryM 02-02-2003, 02:51 PM irocz383, are you going to bring air? Id offer to bring mine but its 220v (probably the wrong plug) and is not too portable. I can however bring about 40ft of airline and a impact gun,air rachet and blower if needed. Just bring an extra nipple for your airline if you have one.

Charles9c1 02-02-2003, 04:44 PM Hey no more talk of hoses and nipples please.... Shaun get's too excited and work is supposed to happen on the car :o
CoryM 02-02-2003, 04:48 PM Sorry Charles, didnt realize talking about bringing my hose, a blower and some nipples would get anyone worked up. Hmmmm i think it is time to head over to the GFs house though :D .

Actually it was the referance to "Mr. Lube" that got me started.
It looks like I'm gonna ned a LOT of beer. Thanks for all the support guys. its' goona be fun.
In fact there are a few 'small' jobs that I was going to do, but with all the help, i might leave them so there are things to do :)
Oh. I got the Castrol synthetic from Costco for this install :)
That being said, should I change to oil after 500 miles with the rebuilt motor and all?

irocz383 02-02-2003, 06:48 PM Yeah, I'll bring the compressor. Its a 110v but it sucks back a lot of juice. Shawn, I hope the wiring in your garge is good. If you have a circuit that doesn't have anything else running on it it should be fine.
What time do you want us there?
zturbo 02-02-2003, 10:33 PM Your going to break the motor in after the rebuild on synthetic???
I would personally get a good regular oil then change after 500miles or so. If you then want to run synthetic great but i wouldn't do it earlier.
Steven
CoryM 02-03-2003, 10:05 PM Might want to ask you engine builder what he recommends to use for break in. I have heard stories of rings never seating if you use synth oil for break in. Although, with moly rings I doubt it.
Often cars from the factory come with a special oil for break in. Most recommend running it xKM then if you want synth to change.
CoryM
mr_muff 02-03-2003, 10:26 PM so how many of you guys are driving there in your f-bodys?
me <---- is
97TA-WS6-Con 02-03-2003, 10:34 PM Yeah, I better forewarn the neighbours LOL
However, on a slightly serious note, please be considerate when entering and leaving my cul-de-sac. There are 32 kids between 10 houses so be careful. :)
mr_muff 02-03-2003, 10:56 PM yea you should " Hi im having some people over to help me put my car together, and there will be some drinking going on later at night and they are all crazy f-body owners, so anything that happens isn't my fault as i have for-warned you"
you are having people stay the night or what not correct?
Draco 02-03-2003, 11:07 PM I'm bringing mine :D
Zedzag 02-03-2003, 11:21 PM Your poor neighbours. To them we'll look like a biker gang only with f-bodies:D
OneFlyn95z28 02-04-2003, 12:26 AM Hey Shaun. Sorry i can not make it but thought I would give ou a heads up.
Run Dino oil for the first 1,000k of break in ;) After the first 500 drive it like you normally would to get rings seated well ;)
Good luck!
97TA-WS6-Con 02-04-2003, 02:16 AM Hey Ellis. Too bad you and Steph could not make it for the weekend. It would have been fun. Get to meet the CDN posse. LOL :)
Think about and let me know if you change your mind. I have an extra double bed if you want to come.
I bought some dino oil.
So run the car gently for 500 miles and then normal after that?
todd15 02-04-2003, 02:28 AM Hey im not bring my f body :p
Charles9c1 02-08-2003, 01:35 PM :D I'm bringing one of those keg sized Sleemans beer and munchies and my damn lawn chair LMAAAAAO. Hope there is one helluva turn out. Ok back to work so I can get my ass over there! I can bring some ice too if that is helpful?
