Whatever happened to the SSR?
I haven't heard anything about it in a while. Is it still a go? When are they going to hit the showroom? I'm not going to buy one, but I was curious.

The SSR was suppose to be ready for sale this summer, but production problems have pushed it back until next spring.

The SSR is probably the best image booster to come from GM in a LONG time.
I don't know why everyone here hates it. It's an awesome vehicle.
Oh and BTW they're sold out for about 2 years, and at a base price of $37,000 a piece that's a lot of R&D money.
BTW spring of '03 is delivery time.

I too don't understand why everyone is so down on SSR. I won't have one, out of my price range and I'm not a big retro fan, but it is a unique product and has the RWD and V8 factor.
Believe me though, I'm just as concerned as everyone else that all of GM's future serious performance products start at around $35k.

Dealers knew how many they were going to get alotted, and began taking deposits long ago...
Now the big debate is whether or not the dealers are contractualy obligated to sell for MSRP, or about 5 grand over.
One guy even reserved I *think* 2 spots, and recently auctioned them off on eBay.... That's right, people paid BIG bucks JUST to get a spot on the waiting list.
Pretty wise of the guy I guess, but a little shady at the same time.

That is creative of him... but pretty lame.
Well when you limit production of something (T-bird, GTO, SSR) it's not all that difficult to sell them out. The GTO is limited to, what, 20,000 units? The Camaro sold more than that and got cancelled, so the SSR "selling out" isn't all that big a deal to me.
Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that GM is taking steps towards exciting vehicles, but I wish they were just a little more realistic for the majority of people. I mean if you're gonna make a 2 seat V-8 powered, rear wheel drive vehicle...why make it a truck? But that's ok, if it's a truck, you can still haul stuff in it...well no, can't do that either. Well if it's a truck, and you can't haul anything in it, at least it's really fast like a Lightning...nope, NA 5.3, and a Lightning will kick it's a**.
I understand the CAFE restraints, I'm just disappointed that this is the best we have right now. It's not as useful as the outgoing F-body, it's slower, it costs more, and I'm sure it gets worse mileage. *sigh*

There was one at the LA show last season. It wasn't bad looking in person & actually was pretty nice.
I know SSR is GM's experiment in creating a way to bring a low volume niche vehicle to market while making a profit, but I think a vehicle like that should at least run with a Lightning or at most, be way more affordable. Do we really need a pickup with a retractable roof?
