Which company do you think has flex brain power as far as motor developement? GM or ford. Or VW. Whichever. If you keep it USA, I say GM. Not because I'm a GM supporter\owner.

I was talking about htis with a friend, and we came to the agreeement that the LS1\6 is one of the most tech. advanced motors on the street today. As far as internal comb. Sure it has push rods, but how powerful the motor is, cost to new\used car buyers, simplicity.

Now I speak often with this ford guy at work and he says the 4.6 is a well put together motor. But the LS1 is so much better. Cash for cash in mods(LS1 vs. 4.6), the LS1 will always be faster. Then he extends the motor talk to 5.0s.

I know the VW W8\W12 and so on are altogether a different thing. Which motor do you think?

There is no limit to what you can make if you are going to charge a premium for it.

The W-engines are pretty clever, but they are also pretty complex & I bet expensive to produce. Current GM engines are simple, dependable, get near amazing gas mileage, and are very powerful.

Ill wait till theres a few hundred thousand of each with over 100k miles, THEN we'll see whose is more technologically sound.

The "W" is kind of a stupid engine. Maddeningly complex for the purpose of...?

The VR6 on the otherhand is much better. It allows them to fit a very small 6 in a car that would normally only fit a 4 (Jetta/Golf). I bet the "W" isn't that much smaller than an LS1.

Some of the 3800 owners around here may have to watch out for the 200HP 6-speed GLI's.

My girlfriend regularly spanks v-6 camaros/mustangs in her 1.8T VW GTI and all she has in it is a $300 chip.

Ah, but that's not fair, at least in my book. It's easy to chip a turbo motor and turn up the boost-- voila, instant horsepower.

Back to the question at hand, though, I think GM is by far the best in North America as far a powertrain development is concerned. They whup Ford in almost every segment: Northstar vs. Intech; LS1 truck vs. modular SOHC; 3800 vs. 3.8; 3100 vs. Vulcan V6; Vortec 4200 vs, well, Ford has nothing there. And GM slushboxes are regularly held up as the best made by any manufacturer anywhere (I'm sure we all know BMW uses a GM autobox, as have Jaguar and Rolls-Royce in the past). The only weak spot for GM is 4-bangers, with the EcoTec being just average. As soon as they can do one as nicely as Nissan or Honda, their portfolio will be complete.
