Just wondering why I see all the people here and nobody autocrosses. It's a blast and we could use more F bodys. There's just a few. If anybody's interested please email me. Thanks, Warner

They are releated to a bigger club..emerald something something hehe.. I know they have a hillclimb, where they close off this 3 mile windy paved road and time you going thru it!

Actually, there are quite a few autocrossers in the Portland, OR area. Have you checked out the PIR schedule?

I was referring to people in Camaro's, there's only 4 of us. Just wondered why so few when it's such a good car to have fun in.

Do you guys ever have track days at PIR? Not talking about the parking lot in the middle, but rather on the full course? Now that would be fun. :D

Yes, my husband, Steve, participates in several track days each year with Team Continental (http://www265.pair.com/tcscca/TC/tcdrvtng.htm/), Cascade Sports Car Club (http://www.cascadescc.com/racing_dt.cfm), and other car club's track days (Rose City Corvettes and others).
He has driven his '68 Camaro Coupe and our '69 Camaro Coupe when it had the 502 in it. He is currently in the process of putting an LS1 and a 6-speed in his '68 and plans on taking it to the track as much as he can afford.
One of these days I'll get out there with our '90 IROC or our '99 SS.

If you'd like to get in on one of these track days, make note of the dates listed in the links I show above. You are welcome to call Steve and talk to him about his experience out there if you want more info. His email addy is mcgees68@hotmail.com and the phone # at the shop is 503-635-8252.

Thanks, I'll look into this. I've wanted to do something like this for a long time because it looks like a TON of fun. The only thing really holding me back is, putting my daily driver in a heat with other cars on a track that is capable of 130mph+ down the straights.

BTW, the "team continental" link didn't work.

I'll email Steve and get some more info.

Thanks again,

Mike

Don't let that hold you back. There are all kinds of cars that show up, from a Ford Ranger pickup, to a minivan, a Taurus and everything else you can think of.

The autocross schedule is at: http://www.oregonregionsolo2.com/home.htm

Mike: there are plenty of track days at PIR. Just check their schedule at portlandraceway.com. Also Cascade Sports Car Club has a great school that is only 120 bucks that is a bargain. You learn alot and they don't hold you back at all. Being on the track with other inexperienced people will hardly cross your mind because it takes everything you got, at least it does for me but I'm fairly new too. By the end of the day you are exhausted and that's only several runs of 20 minutes. You can join the BMW club or the Porsche club for cheap to go to track days which are a hundred bucks. Guaranteed Fun! You may be amazed at how much fun autocrossing is too. It's much more fun and challenging than it looks.

Krazzycowgirl: Sounds like a great way to spend a day. Thanks

Being a CSCC Member/Road Rallier, I highly recommend coming out to a Driver's Training school. I worked Cascade's March school, and there are folks out there with Hertz Rustangs for heaven's sake. Everyone has a blast, and they're geared for folks that have no, little, or some track experience. Each group is classified by experience level, and once on-track, drivers get to "push the pavement" further as the day goes on. A blast to watch or participate in.

Unfortunately, due to Vera Katz' price gouging campaign, PIR track rates have gone up and the Cascade school (and TC also, I believe) is now $189.00 for the classroom and On-Track Driver's Training, but includes lunch at least!

Check the websites for more than enough info on road racing. If you have a vehicle that prefers "rough surfaces" then maybe rallycrossing is for you! The difference is that we take a water truck out on a field to let folks target some cones! See www.oregonrally.com or www.oregonregion.com.

Have spare tires handy

I'd love to goto Team Continental's driving training... but

"Cars with removable tops must have a roll bar that extends over the driver's and instructor's heads. "

means I have to pick up a roll bar too since I have t-tops...

Actually, I need to pick up a helmet too.. anyone recommend a place in the Portland area to get one? any preferences of which one to get? I wear glasses, if that makes any difference.

Ken: I've got t-tops and have been to both corvette day and cascade school. No roll bar here. It's possible someone may ask you to remove your tops so they don't come flying out like I was asked at the corvette day. Just told them I've got subframe connectors and he let it go. Older Camaro and vettes have had the t tops come flying off which is why they're concerned but I'm pretty sure you don't need a roll bar unless its a vert, assuming they haven't changed the rules for this year. If you get a helmet do yourself a favor and don't buy the bottom brands. A good helmet could be worth alot. Also they are more comfortable to wear as they breath better (cooler) and are lighter. Your next concern will be having too much fun, it's addicting.

Cascade & Team Continental generally/usually won't let a T-Top car run w/out a roll bar.

Ken: you or anyone else are more than welcome to come out and autocross if you are concerned about the roll bar rule as there isn't one for autocrossing. I would ask though if going to the track. Like I said neither Cascade SCC nor the corvette club made me have one. Also if you've not autocrossed I'm sure you'll be surprised how much fun it is. It's also harder than it looks and will help alot on the road course too.

i've actually gone to a bunch of local autox's in salem before...

I haven't gone to a "real" SCCA AutoX yet, but I hope so this year..

I'll try to contact someone in person about the driver training at PIR to get the exact answer if I need a rollbar or not. Either way, I'd still wouldn't mind one to put in when I get my arse over to the tracks.

This summer I'm gonna try to make it to more events.... and then go from there

which events are you planning on going this year?

Your best bet is to contact the organization that is putting on the event. It's most likely up to Team Continental, Cascade SCC, or whatever group is renting the track for the day.

Many people wait until the Corvette club does their track day (if there's room)...they let convertibles run w/out roll bars.

Again, call the group running the event, not PIR. That's where you'll get your answer. Good luck, and have fun!

Next SCCA autocross is May 17, 18th. Let me know if you want to go either day and I'll meet you there. One day of that weekend I'm probably going to go to the season opener in Woodburn. Cascade has a school in early June. They are very helpful and worth every penny even though the price has nearly doubled do to the city of Portland. It's 189 and you'll be going about as fast as you can go on the track, possibly faster than you should have. The course is a ton of fun and I plan on going again most likely at the June class assuming it's not full. Hope to see you there. It's always nice to see some F cars as there aren't that many.

I'll most likely be at the Cascade June driver's school. I will be seeking a definitive answer from the Race Team about the regulations regarding T-Top cars. These driver's schools, although more costly this year, are a real blast. Usually there are much fewer cars in a school group than an actual race group, which can be both liked/disliked depending on if you like a little room and perfecting your personal bests!

I've heard folks pleased with CSCC, TC and SCCA schools, unfortunately, 16-18 year olds cannot compete in CSCC (and TC?) events yet, hopefully to be changed before long to allow more folks into this sport.

I believe that the driver's schools are excellent at expressing safety and car control, particularly useful to everyday driving and crash avoidance in soggy NW weather!

Excellent points RallyTransAm. Also I think the schools are an excellent idea for anybody who drives period. Regarding the t-tops I had no problem with Cascade school. Never even mentioned it to me. Hope to meet you there.

The autocross course in Portland is twice the size of Salem and much faster. Also it's much safer as there's less to run into. At least this is what I'm told.
