If you have a stock motor, I'd be willing to take that on trade, and take $5k plus your stocker. I may be able to take care of PCM issues depending on your particular vehicle. I can take a Visa or Mastercard for this. I am willing to supply the weekend where we can Remove and Replace both engines, in my nice shop. I'm sure we can even get a few extra hands involved to make sure we fly through smoothly. (I might even supply the beer).
That equates to getting over a $10,000 Engine at less then half price.

I'm actually trying to sell the whole car, but I feel this will be an easier way to sell it, as the car is more marketable w/ a stock engine. I'd prefer to sell it whole to save myself the work.
We're having a baby around July, and coupled with an unfinished Z28, I'm just looking to liquidate the Hawk, and finish the Z, instead of pulling thousands more out of pocket.....
Gotta have some sensibility I suppose. ;)

Well...I suppose :D. Anyway, good luck with the sale and the new addition to your family! With a dyno graph-backed engine package like that, I don't think you'll have a hard time finding a buyer.
BTW - Will the finished Z be equipped with a Simpson Racing Baby Seat :) ???

It's obvious that this motor had zero expenses spared and it should put out a lot of HP. Thats Given. The question I have is how? The cam isn't that big and you see guys like Payam and Matt making about 40-50rwhp less, even with their high flowing heads. What kind of tricks are they using (windage tray, special top secret lightening techinques etc...) other than using top quality parts? I wonder why there aren't any engine builders up here that came match those numbers? Is it worth it to buying an MTI short block? Can just simply properly matching the comb be worth this much hp?

97TA-WS6-Con 01-23-2003, 12:46 AM You can buy 383 / 396 crate motors with stage 2 heads producing 440 / 450 crank HP. Not uncommon at all. When I bought the motor, the vendor had 11.5:1 pistons and it had been built for nitrous. He never ran the motor but was absolutely targetting 500 crank HP but he was also using a DFI. candidly i think that was an agressive target.
Kurtis, is that dyno sheet from an engine dyno or a chassis dyno?
KTamez 01-23-2003, 01:02 PM Boy! Skepticism abound! ;) Shaun, we did two pulls before I bought the car on an Above ground Dynojet 248 Chassis Dyno.
Andy, Some combinations just work better then others. As you noted there may be a couple of sets of heads that "flow" better then this engine's does, but does that mean they "work" better?
Keep in mind now its an M6, w/ a 10 bolt, that does help the dyno numbers due to rotational and parasitic losses.
Ellis recently dyno'd his stock shortblock Heads/Cam car, and came up with just a couple ponies under 400rw w/ an Auto and . Make his an M6, and throw in a 10 bolt, and he's looking at 420 range. What would he get with another 46 cubes?
Around the same time this car was built GMHTP's Formula (The Yellow one), went to MTI and recieved basically the same shortblock, and then re-used an LPE Top-End. The results were 405-415 rwhp (Can't remember the exact number), with a smaller emmissions legal cam, and I believe Shorty headers.
Now to contradict myself. Honestly I don't see this engine as a run of the mill engine. I think it does perform slightly better then the norm, but nothing at all freakish.
oldschool 01-23-2003, 02:42 PM Not skepticism on my part, I'm just truely amazed at how much hp a matching combo can be worth. My heads flow okay numbers I guess (255cfm int) matched with a cc305, Hooker LT's, Electric water pump etc...I think I'd be lucky for 360-365rwhp.
I never ment to imply that your numbers seemed too high...I just wanted to see if these guys at MTI provide any aditional benefit when building an engine over and above what a speed shop in the North West can.

PONYEATER 01-23-2003, 02:57 PM The guys at MTI like any other GOOD engine shop do things right and do thing to maximize a combination. a 305CC with those flow numbers doesn't sound like it will push 360rw but who knows. There is such a thing as driveability also, Kurtis firehawk may not be as driveable as some other cars with less HP.

oldschool 01-23-2003, 04:52 PM For my ideal hp #'s, I'm just going with what people have told me and observing what other, similar combos have made. I admit 360-365 is a long shot but who knows. I'd be happy with anything above 350-355rwhp but above 360 was my original goal. I could have gone with a 306 for the same price but I didn't want to have to mess around with fuel problems, worse milage and reduced drivability. Although sometimes I wonder what a 306 would have been like...;) :D :confused:
