Motor Trend announces SUV of the Year contenders
When Motor Trend picks its favorite sport utility vehicle, the winner will have bragging rights for an entire year. And we'll know all about it, because the victorious company behind the winning crossover or SUV will shout it from the rooftops (and in print, TV and web advertisements) about their shiny golden award. We can argue all day long about whether many of the nominees can be legitimately be considered sport/utlility vehicles, but either way, this year, there are 11 vehicles up for consideration, with pedigrees ranging from a single traditional body-on-frame SUV to a brace of competent and efficient family haulers and richly appointed luxury crossovers.
As Motor Trend Editor-in-Chief Angus McKenzie points out on the magazine's blog, there is only one traditional SUV on the list, and it takes the size and shape of the Toyota 4Runner. The rest of the vehicles are crossovers, with seven of the 11 candidates sporting luxury badging, three coming from General Motors and one stablemate to last year's SUV of the year, the Subaru Outback. When choosing the SUV of the year, MT says it looks at packaging, presentation and intended function, along with obvious criteria like aesthetics and performance. As I've been "testing" this class of vehicles for my mom, here are my impressions:
Lexus RX - Great interior/a bit pricey... pure luxury.
Cadillac SRX - Haven't seen/but based on what I've read, would be my #1 choice.
Audi Q5 - I like Audis so I was bummed that it was way overpriced for what you get.
Chevrolet Equinox - I want to love the Equinox because it is so fuel miserly. However what I don't like is the cheap fake leather, the crappy NAV system and the tiny backup camera. Otherwise I'd put it on par with some of the others. (Yes, I tested an LTZ FWD.)
Volvo XC60 - Too pricey/crappy fuel mileage, however impressive vehicle otherwise.
For the $40K+ crowd I have to say its a tie between the Lexus RX and Cadillac SRX... and I haven't test driven the Cadillac yet, so that's saying a lot.
For the under $30k crowd, the Equinox is a bargain, however I can't stop thinking that I'd rather have the Chevrolet Traverse instead. (A little bit bigger.)
The rest on the list, I haven't tested or seen in person.

Is this because of the offroad capabilities and towing? Granted, it will beat everything else on the list. But last year's winner was based mainly on fuel economy. Gas isn't $4, so maybe it will be different this year.
I agree with this, and on top of that I think they will give the Equinox points for most improved. I test drove one and felt like I was in a Caddy compared to my '07 LT.
You never know what will win. The Tundra edged out the Silverado 2500 a couple years ago because the Tundra "will have a bigger impact on the market" than the 2500 Silverado, even though they touted the 2500 as the "best truck."

It would be pretty sweet to see the equinox win. Maybe the 'nox is more important to the market?
And the winner is ....... a station wagon.

I guess now all it takes is a hatch back to be considered an SUV
