That's the biggest question. Extended cab with only 350 HP? Why bother.

What a disappointment, I really thought they were pulling a fast one on us and that they would produce something worthy when it actually went into production, but that is really sad. seesh GM i thought you wanted to "blow the doors off the lightning" with this POS we will be lucky to blow the doors off a Harley F-150 let alone the mighty L... GM got no bal*z
Z28Wilson 06-19-2002, 03:53 PM 345 HP and AWD...sounds like the Sierra C3. Do you know anybody who has purchased a C3, let alone purchased one for its performance? http://web.camaross.com/bb/redface.gif

Z284ever 06-19-2002, 05:20 PM I'm not too upset about the Silverado SS. 345 hp, AWD and 20" wheels will make it nice enough.....
Does it really need to blow away an SR/T in a straight line?
After all this is just a truck!
Now if Chevy came out with a Z/28 that didn't absolutely blow away it's competitors....now, that would be something to get mad about!
I thought the 345HP 6.0L was a Caddy exclusive? What happened to the 390HP 6.0L in the 1999 concept? If this is short box reg cab it will be an ok truck, but ex-cab would just be a Chevy version of the C3.
if they aren't going to use the 8.1L or a S/C V8 then they should just use the LS6.
I hope they can keep the cost down to $30K or lower.
25thTA 06-19-2002, 08:25 PM This might be a dumb question but, can someone explain what the benefit of AWD is and why I would want that over a, say, 400hp rear-wheel-only truck?
Can the 160 HP Cavalier 'SS' be far behind?
guionM 06-19-2002, 09:42 PM The Silverado "SS" is an extended cab, 4 wheel drive pickup with 20" wheels & special bumpers? Not exactly down my line, but still 345 horsepower in a pickup is certainly nothing to sneeze at.
We all knew for some time that this truck wasn't going to compete with Lightning or the Ram PVO, so it is somewhat amusing that some thought GM was trying to pull some sneeky business by creating a deception that this truck would be a surprize.
Just the same, I still view it as another pimping of the SS name. At the risk of of being repetitious, the "new" Impala SS & now this Silverado SS should help settle that dumb SS vs Z28 debate as to what name is more special and has more meaning to Camaro. :P
Doug Harden 06-19-2002, 09:48 PM So the Lightning is a 400hp rear wheel drive.......with obvious traction concerns........and we get a 345 hp ALL wheel drive with concievably NO traction problems.....and winter drivability.....hhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

...Which brings me to my question: What exactly is the point in producing this thing? If it doesn't undercut the Lightning by at least a few grand, it won't sell at all because everyone knows there's something on the market that does what it's supposed to do--better, for similar money. In fact, how much do you wanna bet that this thing will sticker for more than an L?

It will be the same engine in the Escalade...different exahust and gearing though. Also keep in mind that the engine is underrated like most GM engines. Sadly I doubt it is under rated 50-60 HP http://web.camaross.com/bb/frown.gif

The concept from the 99 SEMA show i think it was, had a 480hp and 495tq output from a stroked 6.6 ltr engine, couldn't they adapt something like that, and this is supposed to be the first official product from the stupid Special products team, if this is what crap they are producing then i'm sorry but they will not compete with the chevy's maybe the Cadillac's (CTS with the LS6 and the TT Escalade but nothing else so far) but it looks like GM has truned it's back on chevy. JOn Moss gave so many hints taht the concept would be almost the same thing as the production model but alas. The reason i am so mad is that it is the 10th year anniv. for the 454SS that was a legend in it's own. I would have thought they would have brought it back for this since the old L and 454 used to duke it out back in the days.. anyways underrated or not it doesnt impress..... GM it's time to shape up for goodness sake i don't want to have to get that Cavalier "ss" and loose to a crappy SVT FOCYS

If you want a high-performance vehicle.... Why would you want it to be one that weighs over two tons, has the aerodynamics of a brick, is HUGE yet won't fit a bunch of your friends comfortably, and it's pickup bed is virtually useless for what it was designed for in the first place(hauling stuff!) ???? http://web.camaross.com/bb/confused.gif http://web.camaross.com/bb/confused.gif http://web.camaross.com/bb/confused.gif

Well I think one of the things that make the lightning so attractive is that it can haul the same as a regular F150 in the bed. Plus if you wanna pull your race car to the track no problem.. All that plus it handles well and has awesome power..

OK, well that is one thing I did not know about the Lightning... that it can handle the same payload as a regular F150. Well, that helps a bit, but I still think a Pickup would fall short in a 'performance vehicle' setting...
Honestly, I've never driven a Lightning, so I am not speaking from experience here... just trying to get people thoughts on the whole concept.

My question is, who are the perspective buyers? It's a half-a$$ed attempt at a performance truck so I doubt it will steal Lightning/SRT-10 sales. Basically, a Silverado with a bit more powerful engine and a body kit. Which will cost more than the other Silverados which people buy for more conventional reasons. Follow me? It's basically too little for the performance truck crowd and too much for everyone else.
Darth, I agree that performance pickups are an oxymoron. I am not very interested in them, but that isn't the point. If Chevy is going to get into the sport-truck segment, it should COMPETE!

Trucks make good work vehicles, tow vehicles and parts chasers...why anyone would think a fast 3 ton truck is fun to drive is beyond me.

I don't know about where you live, but over here in Texas EVERYONE is putting 20 inch rims on their truck, dropping it, and adding body kits. If done tastefully, it looks bad@ss. These guys don't race their trucks either. Harley F-150s sell like hotcakes and are all over town, while I always see 3-4 Lightnings sitting at the SVT Ford dealership. Majority of truck buyers don't compare quarter mile times, but do compare looks and usefulness. I think thats why its gonna have an extended cab. Oh yeah, I am really considering getting one.

1967-2002, Thanks for 35 years of prestige and performance...... We look forward to the FUTURE.
The extreme doesn't have competition like the ranger, it has a solid market where the younger kids buy those pickups and keep it for the looks, the SS is supposed to beat the L in performance, that is the reason it gets the "SS" moniker, if it was design it should have been the Silverado RS. I/'m from Texas and all we see are trcusk, everyday I see at least two L's on the street and they look good, If only Chevy came out with BOTH a Single cab config with a HD tranny and a pumped engine to take on the L and an ext. cab for the people that need AWD and 20's (BTW 20-s ads even more weight to the body kit and the AWD system, so i'm sure performance is not the goal here....
1990 Turbo Grand Prix 06-20-2002, 06:45 PM At the Chicago auto show they had a black stepside reg cab with understated flames stuffed with a 502 GMPP crate engine (A John Moss creation perhaps?) . I remember saying to myself that this would kick some serious L___ and SRT @ss. GM, give us something to win with, we know you can.

White2000SS 06-20-2002, 09:56 PM Hey Did anyone see that Dodge ( i hate to say that word!) on I think Car and Driver? It had a Viper V10 in it and was a regular cab with 5 or 6 on the floor! It also had I think 22 or 23 inch rims. I hate to say it but that truck was Bad Arse! I think that it was just a prototype but they said something similar would probably come from it, But I still won't buy a dodge! I just traded in my 2001 reg cab, pewter Z71 with the 5.3 for my SS. I always wanted one, but I think I'll buy a truck again when I can afford both!! If anyone knows what I'm talking about, mabey they can give more insight about the Dodge I saw. Later

Z28Wilson 06-20-2002, 11:39 PM White2000SS...the Ram you saw is the SRT/10, shown on the auto circuit last year, and it IS going into production with the Viper's 500 HP V10.
The Xtreme S10 is a good point. The Xtreme S10 was also a John Moss creation that in concept form had a nice small block in it. In production form it boasts the whopping 2.2 which pushes it down the 1/4 in about 18 seconds. Do you sense a re-occuring theme here? One of my biggest complaints the last few years is the fact that Moss and Co. have come up with some awesome stuff that is dumbed down to the point where you can't take anything seriously anymore. Funny you don't see Ford or even Dodge "dumbing down" their concepts....

guionM 06-21-2002, 04:44 PM I'd honestly say that Lightning is the only truck I'd consider driving. It's extremely fast for an automatic anything (let alone a truck), and it looks great inside & out.
But I value handling as much as acceleration, so I never got one. But though I considered Lightning, Silverado SS just doesn't seem interesting.
Now, if Chevrolet came out with a modern LS1 powered, 6 speed ElCamino, that would be a very very different story.
