rear end noise after long drives
rear end noise after long drives
I have a 97 Z-28 6-speed (144K miles) and I would appreciate some advice.
There is a metal-on-metal grinding noise (loud) coming from the rear of the car, but only after long trips. I would say that I have to drive over 30 miles to before I will hear the noise. The noise happens only for a few seconds when getting off of the highway and turning left or right. It doesn't have to be a sharp turn either - if i so much as change lanes on an off-ramp when getting off of the highway it will make the noise. Then it goes away. I don't hear it again until the next long trip and the next off-ramp.
Some background info - diff was replaced with new about 40,000 miles ago by dealer. I replaced the diff fluid with recommend 90w gear oil and additive about 5,000 miles ago - there were no shavings. I did not use GM additive - I used something they gave me at Kragen that they said was the same thing. It did say on the bottle that it was the GM recommended diff additive. I checked the fluid this morning and it is full.
Sometimes I hear a faint clicking noise at slow speed that comes with every revolution of the wheels.
Rear brake rotors have never been replaced (UGH, I know), but I felt the rotors and there doesn't seem to be any horrible grooves. The pads seem thin however. I will be replacing the rotors and pads this week.
Any advice before I start tearin' stuff apart? Wheel Bearings?
Thank You very much.

It might be this

This is what happened to me and I made my own shim out of sheet metal. Only thing I can think of why it doesn't do it right away is because everything is cold. Maybe when the metal heats up and expands it starts rubbing.

I have a friend with a new Vette that has had a very similar problem. Took it to the dealer a couple of times. Turned out to be the posi clutch dics making noise when the slipped. The dealer finally replace the packs with new High Performance disc's.
P.S. have you checked with the dealer to see if there is a Service Bulletin on this??
