MeefZ28 01-18-2003, 06:46 PM I "totalled" my car. All the damage is on the frame underneath.
It's a 97 Z28 with 72000 miles.
Insurance is giving me 12k for the car.
Should I buy it back? The only damage is on the frame (they won't fix it since they can't guarantee structural integrity, so they're selling it for scrap).
Should I buy the car back and sell it piece by piece?
How much could I get for the engine/ other parts??
Or should I just take the 12k?
I have to decide by monday so please let me know what i should do.

chuckys95 01-18-2003, 07:16 PM how much can you buy it back for?
Blue89Bird 01-18-2003, 07:49 PM Did you already agree to the 12,000?
If not make them a deal, just be like "That car really had some sentimental value to me, just give me 11,000 and let me keep it."
Worked out very well for me when I thought I wasn't gonna end up with anything for my car.
I got 13,500 and got to keep the car. Pics in sig. Sold the car on ebay and got 3500 for it. So got 17,000 for a car which cost me 10,500 and had about 2000 in mods.

Brent94Z 01-18-2003, 09:33 PM If they are going to give you $12k for the car they will give it to you even if you buy the car back.
I believe in Florida they are REQUIRED to give you first shot at the car. You might be able to buy it back for a couple thousand or so. I think I Florida they make the agent sell it to the owner if he wants it. What this does is prevents insurance agents from totalling a car (when it shouldn't be) then buying it themselves for cheap. I've heard of this being done before which is why I think they are required to offer you the car first.
MeefZ28 01-19-2003, 05:09 PM I don't know how much it'd be to buy it back.
like brent said, i get the 12k regardless; then i can buy it back if i want.
IF i decide i want to deal w/ selling out the parts, how much should I pay to buy the car back?
Some guys in the LT1 forum said try to settle for 11k (1k buyback) and see if they'll agree.
Some facts on the car:
Exterior is in fine shape except for the front left fascia behind the wheel.
Engine is fine- 72k miles
Damage is primarily on the frame- busted firewall.
Everything from the steering wheel back is fine.
Let me know what yall think. (I live in AL fyi).
Thanks again,
J

Im sorry to hear that you wrecked your car! I assume your okay, and thats good...So how did it happen? Who's fault was it? And with the insurance money are you going to buy another camaro? Did your car have leather seats?
MeefZ28 01-20-2003, 09:37 AM Thanks Rez. Yeah I'm fine- I'll go into the details later.
Yeah i had leather seats.
I think i'm just gonna keep the 12k and not try to buy it back and part it out- too much of a hassle.
I'm leaving now (9am) to go pull all my mods off the car and say goodbye.

Blue89Bird 01-20-2003, 10:38 AM You dont have to part it out to make money. Get it back for under 1k, and put it on ebay, you can probably get 2500 for it. EASY CASH.
treyZ28 01-20-2003, 10:42 AM i'd imagine you can sell the wheels/tires/tranny/motor/seats/t-tops/rear and such for over $1000!
even if you break even, you helped some people on the forum
then there are the little things EVERYONE needs
MAF, center console, interior peices, hood, tail lights, etc
MeefZ28 01-20-2003, 01:20 PM They'd want $2150 for it.
I doubt I'd make much more than that parting it out, so I'm just gonna take the 12k I think, unless someone in the AL neighborhood says they'll buy it for 3k, but I doubt that would happen.
Now I gotta find me a good car for sale.

treyZ28 01-20-2003, 01:28 PM sell ya mine for $15000 ;)
MeefZ28 01-20-2003, 02:07 PM too rich- i'm looking in the 11-12k ballpark

Blue89Bird 01-20-2003, 03:56 PM they don't want 2150 for it, if they said 2150 they wont 1250, trust me, I've done 3 times.
krazzycowgirl 01-20-2003, 05:00 PM Ok here is my exprience with totaled out cars.
When My husbands 87 Iroc was Totaled out in 2001
We ended up getting close to $4500 for the car (we Paid $500 & traded a 79 Camaro for it back in Nov of 2000)
Our Insurance company went back 6months looking for that car with all options on it (they couldnt find one) so they went back a full year (they found one that sold for $4500) We got that amount Then we bought back the car for about $800 we stripped everything we can think of from the car The small stuff that wouldnt require much to ship in the mail we put on ebay & we made that $850 back ($50 was for the towing it away via junk yard).
We still have some of the interior pieces & the Engine (Selling that package for $1200)
I would take the money & the car & then make sure it hits a Crusher Because there are some insurance companies that will give the owners money & say the car is totaled then take it to a shop fix it up & sell it with a savage title.
Oh BTW When our insurance company called & told My husband that they found a car with all the Options that his had in it had sold for $4500 8months earlier My husband rattled off the VIN number & what color it was & the Options in it. She was shocked & asked how he knew that. He Said " Well since the car is now sitting in my driveway when my wife is not working" It is my 87 Iroc. They were less then 200 apart in the line.
