I wonder where they're going to get their engines and transmissions from. Are they an original design? I can't see that being good when police departments need replacement parts down the road.

IIRC, the engine was a Volvo sourced, 3.0L turbo diesel V6.

Seriously, i can't believe it's remotely cost effective to design a stand alone police car and the lack of economies of scale for replacement parts.

If it is economicly feasible to build something 1 off like that you really have to question GM and certain users on here who throw a fit about cost when you mention a different nose or engine or firebird....

Didn't Carbon Motors announce that they were working on something like this several months ago? I seem to remember concept drawings of something that looked MUCH more badass. I remember thinking it looked kinda like the tank-car-thing they used for the Batmobile in the new Batman movies. I had no luck trying to find pictures.

Did some more searching, found a couple of threads from December '08, but the pictures are the same.

420 lb-ft of diesel torque, and only 245-series tires?

They'll never catch me; I'll be long gone before they get traction.

The cost (or mentioned economies of scale) is actually more of a "special case" for law enforcement vehicles.

A Charger needs to be upfitted with vast amounts of equipment before it goes out on patrol - and that work is all done after the vehicle is off the line (where labor would be much cheaper). While Carbon's upfront cost will be higher, the vehicle will come "ready to go" with Police modifications that are all factory installed (and thusly carry a warranty) where the Charger's required mods will only break warranty terms.

Also, the Carbon has added "features" specifically tweaked for cops - like a plastic washable backseat that has provisions for someone to sit with their arms behind them - or seatbelts that buckle toward the doorframe (minimizing an officer leaning over a perp).

Though I'm guessing many highway patrol officers would love to get an "Intimidator" Camaro SS () or Z28 () this will have to do.

What's the cost per to municipalities? $45k, $55k? Crazy thing happens with government, they have no problem with finding new bigger better things to spend our tax dollars. At the same time there isn't an ounce of frugality involved. What's wrong with the police units that are offered now?

There's so much waste it's crazy. Cities send out notifications on four color paper (print) when black and white would do. A local fire station was just built with an LED sign out by the street that displays the City's logo, time, temp and other meaningless stuff. Where's the frugality with our tax dollars? These are the same municipalities that have neglected our basic infrastructure, water, sewer, roads, and bridges. Amazing as it might be somehow they don't have dollars to spend on road and bridge maintenance and repairs. Maybe because they f$%4ed it off on all kinds of meaningless crap. Who comes up with these ideas?

I agree with your sentiment, but according to their website, the C7 will be priced competitively with current police cars and be less expensive to operate.

The one best suited to police duty (the Crown Victoria) is being phased out.
