I was wondering, how safe or smart would it be to do a heads / cam job on a LS1 motor with 100K Miles or higher? Should a rebuild be done first? If so, what parts need to be replaced to be considered a rebuild and how much extra would that cost to do?

Do a compression test and if the compression & oil pressure are good go ahead and give it a try. Just make sure that you do all of the supporting parts ie. oil pump, timing chain, lifters, pushords, ect.

If it's not smoking and the compression looks good, I'd do the same thing as any other heads/cam LS1 buildup with the addition of replacing the lifters as well.

I've done three cam swaps and two head swaps the last at 128,000 miles the car now has 191,000 miles on it and still running strong...GM designed these motors to last 200,000 + miles if maintianed properly...if the car runs good I would go ahead and do the mods and don't look back...:D
