Aside from the fact that there was no "G8 to Caprice" program to actually cancel (it was purely a speculative exercise and nothing more) - GM can credit many of their recent success stories and improved new vehicles to Bob Lutz and his passion for cars over simply counting beans in the drawer.
And for the GM blog link (straight from the source, as they say) see below...

good thing. thats one of the reasons they went into their shlthole...cuz they kept renamin cars instead of buildin new good ones
they coulda built a good quality sedan....instead they built a hybrid full size pickup

Ok, so Maximum Bob got his leash jerked already. So what. Good PRODUCT idea, not his fault it was shot down because there is no business case. I bet the CAFE change is largely to blame for this. It would sell fine if we were allowed to, I'm pretty sure. High volume, maybe not. And it would probably siphon off some Camaro sales.
Still, cop cars alone seem like they could justify some kind of a program, were it not for having too many 'low fuel efficiency cars' - every one sold adds that much more cost to helping the rest of the fleet bring the average up. Delightful.

The thing is only few days ago the same Lutz said G8 will be the next Caprice in the states.
Car forums, enthusiasts, were all itching for some more details. Lots of speculations on price, options, ... even the comeback of the RWD Chevy cop car was in the clouds out there.
and now wam bam.

I want a G8 so bad it drives me crazy. The only reason I won't take the leap is because of the fear of maintenance costs. A low production car from Australia? Those parts will be fun to get. 9 quarts of oil per oil change gets spendy too.
You can still get the Caprice.... JUst have to order it oversea and have it shipped in.
