The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro may be Americana summed up on four-wheels, but the modern day muscle is reportedly headed for the European market. General Motors had been on the fence about sending the Camaro to Europe, but the popular pony car will spearhead the Chevrolet brand’s product expansion on the other side of the [...]

Well that's all well and good but considering Australia did a lot of the development work on Camaro, when could Australia safely expect to see RHD versions make it to our shores?

Guy? Anyone?

Can people buy Chevrolets in Australia? RHD or not?

Yes. Mainly a few trucks that have been privately imported. As long as the vehicle is not a recent one (e.g. less than 15+ years old) then the owner is able to drive the LHD vehicle on the road in most states provided a LHD sticker is clearly displayed on the vehicle.

EDIT: http://www.aaa.asn.au/touring/bringing.htm

A relatively new vehicle must be converted over to RHD and some importers do this but the overall cost of the car is exorbitant. To give an example, the Z06 Corvette would cost over $AU220K even though the same car costs around $US70K.

$AUD = 0.80c USD

The Camaro is engineered for RHD but to save cost, GM postponed RHD production indefinitely... but I'm keen to hear what the revised plans are given GM's new lease on life.

Interesting info. I'm not sure what the rules are here for RHD cars but I've seen a few Japanese spec Skylines driving around.

I think Australia is a great place for the Camaro. GM should work out a deal with Holden to have them sold/serviced in their dealers. Considering how much work Holden did in development of the car and its Zeta roots one would think it's an easy fit. I guess that's something for the "new GM" to figure out.

So when will Top Gear test it?

The 'problem' (although it may be seen to be a good problem to have) I see is HSV (company is 75% owned by Tom Walkinshaw) sell their cars for a premium over bread 'n' butter Holdens, as tricked up versions. The prospect of having Camaro land on our shores would give HSV nightmares as it would compete with HSV's offerings head on.

I'd imagine that Holden would want to have Camaro sell at Monaro prices (circa $AUD60K) but HSV would want a nice cushion between its products and Camaro, meaning $AUD+80K). That's the dilemma. :(

But I'd like to think that the New GM is far more mature than that... :p

Wrong. Most European countries are LHD. I think the British are the only RHD over there. I lived in (continental) Europe for two years and never saw any RHD.

someone should let them know they're driving on the wrong side of the road then...
